THE RHODES SCHOLARSHIPS University of Oxford

1. General
One of the objects of Mr. Rhodes in establishing these Scholarships was to give future leaders the benefit of a period of study at Oxford University and thereby the opportunity of experiencing all that Oxford offers. The Scholarships are not, therefore, to be seen merely as a way of gaining a graduate
degree.

A Rhodes Scholarship is tenable only for full time study at the University of Oxford. After election to a Scholarship, a successful candidate has still to be found a place in the relevant department or faculty of the University as well as a place in an Oxford College. There is no guarantee of a place and the award of a Scholarship is not confirmed by the Rhodes Trustees until a Scholarelect has been accepted by the University and a College for admission.
Election to the Scholarship is normally for two years but the Scholarship may be held for one year only, depending upon the degree programme pursued by the Scholar. The Trustees impose no requirement that a Scholar should study in Oxford for more than one year. A Scholarship may be renewed, at the omplete discretion of the Trustees, for a third and final year for those who were initially admitted to Oxford to pursue a doctoral degree.
A Rhodes Scholar receives ?11,500 sterling a year as a personal allowance in Oxford. The Scholar’s fees are paid by the Trust to the University and the College direct. The Rhodes Trust will meet the cost of a Scholar’s air travel, economy class, to the United Kingdom and back to Kenya at the end of the Scholarship.

A Rhodes Scholar is expected to be a fulltime student, and tenure of other awards in conjunction with a Rhodes Scholarship is not permitted without prior consultation with theWarden of the Rhodes House.
The Rhodes Trust will not pay for field research work.

2. Distribution of Scholarships
For the election for the academic year beginning in October each year, two Scholarships are available for competition in Kenya.

3. Conditions of Eligibility
NOTE: Applications from candidates who are not eligible will be neither entertained noracknowledged.
1.
Candidates must be citizens of Kenya (candidates who hold dual citizenship may not apply in more than one of the countries of which they are
citizens).
2.
Candidates must have been physically resident in Kenya for a period or periods totalling not less than five years during the ten years
immediately preceding the date of the application.
3.
Candidates must appear in person before the Selection Committee in Nairobi if required to do so. It is expected that interviews will be held in
early November each year.
4.
Candidates must have passed their nineteenth birthday and must not have passed their twentyseventh birthday by 1st October of the year in
which they will commence their award.
5.
Candidates must already hold a University degree of First or Upper second class standard (i.e. with an average score of 65% / GPA 3.7 or more
in Kenya).
6.
Candidates must demonstrate that there exists at Oxford a course of study suitable for their needs.
Subject to ratification by the Rhodes Trustees, the Selection Committee for Kenya is responsible for deciding whether candidates comply with the
foregoing conditions and for making nominations. In any case of doubt the Trustees reserve complete discretion to determine the eligibility or otherwise of
the candidate.
