The World Bank funded Robert S. McNamara Fellowships program up to $25,000 are available for PhD students to conduct development-related research at a host institution abroad. These doctoral research fellowships are awarded for young lecturers and researchers preparing a doctoral thesis. Research grants’ duration is 5 to 10 months period in a renowned university or research center. Applicants must have completed master’s degree or equivalent. Students must be full time lecturer or researcher by an academic or research institution in their home country. The selection criteria for fellowship award are academic performance, teaching and research experience, and relevance of the proposed research program. The application deadline is February 11, 2015.

Eligibility: Applicants must meet the following general criteria to be eligible for a fellowship award:
-Applicants home country is a World Bank member developing country.
– are not a dual citizen of a developed country.
-are currently enrolled in a PhD program in a World Bank member country.
-will have completed all coursework and exam requirements for your PhD at the time of application.
-have a master’s degree.
-are 35 years or younger as of February 11th, 2015.
-meet one of the following conditions:
a) are enrolled in a PhD program in their home country, and not currently employed.
b) are enrolled in a PhD program in their home country or another World Bank member country and are working in an academic or research institution in their home country.
-are accepted as a visiting scholar for a period of six to ten months by a university or research center in a World Bank member country other than their home country.
– Applicants research proposal is endorsed by your PhD thesis supervisor and your host institution.
-Applicants can begin your fellowship between July and December 2015.
-Applicants are able to complete their proposed fellowship research in 6 to 10 months.
-Applicants commit to returning to their home country to complete their PhD and work after completion of your research.
-Applicants are not an Executive Director, his/her alternate, staff, or consultant of the World Bank Group (the World Bank, International Finance Corporation, International Development Association, Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency, and International Center for Settlement of Investment Disputes), and applicants do not have any relatives or in-laws who are employed by the World Bank Group in any capacity, including consulting.

The World Bank Robert S. McNamara Fellowship Program awards fellowships of up to $25,000 annually for developing country PhD candidates to conduct innovative, development-related, doctoral research under the supervision of a research advisor at a host institution abroad. Research grants cover residence and research costs for a 6 to 10 month period in a host university or research center of the candidate’s choosing, outside of their home country. Fellows are expected to advance their research work mainly by using the facilities and resources provided by the host institution and by interacting with peers. Candidates who are selected from the 2015 call for applications will be expected to begin their fellowship between July and December 2015. Candidates are requested to submit a budget for their fellowship, using the Robert S. McNamara budget template provided on the fellowship’s website, covering the costs related to their research program: tuition; living allowance; basic medical and/or accident insurance; travel; and an allowance for the cost of research, including books, research materials, software, local field trips (for data collection), research expenses, fees for host institution seminars/conferences, printing and other miscellaneous expenses.

Duration of award(s): The purpose of the grant is to help fellows advance their doctoral research work through a residency period of five to ten months in a host institution in a country other than their home country or country of residence.
What does it cover? Candidates are requested to submit a budget for their fellowship covering the costs related to their research program: travel; insurance and living expenses; fees for courses and participation to seminars; and a books and software allowance. The grant amount to be awarded to each fellow will be decided by the Selection Committee. The maximum amount of the grant is US$ 25,000.
