Thomas Ramsay Science And Humanities Fellowship 2008

About the Thomas Ramsay Science and Humanities Fellowship

The Thomas Ramsay Science and Humanities Fellowship was established in 1978, and named in honour of Sir Thomas Ramsay, a prominent local philanthropist interested in Australian history, education and science, and a member of the Science and Humanities Committee from 1979-1987.

The Thomas Ramsay Science and Humanities Committee (a sub-committee of the Museums Board of Victoria) is responsible for administering the Thomas Ramsay Science and Humanities Fellowship, and awarding the Fellowship every 2-3 years (depending on available funds).

The two broad objectives of the Science and Humanities Fellowship are:

  • To encourage a high standard of research, scholarship and artistic pursuit linking science to the humanities; and,
  • To foster achievement, especially Australian, in this field.

While many research workers, artists and scholars have, individually, united science and the humanities, this Fellowship, in deliberately fostering such a link through annual funding and institutional support, offers opportunity for distinguished works of wide cultural benefit.

The Fellowship, funded by the Thomas Ramsay Trust Fund, encourages original research, scholarship or artistic endeavour that links the sciences and the humanities within the broad interests and responsibilities of Museum Victoria.

Eligibility

Applicants may be engaged in any relevant research, scholarship or artistic discipline, and be capable of undertaking a specific project that links the sciences and humanities, and contributes to the Museum’s development.

Preference will be given to applicants whose proposed work will contribute to the Museum’s overall objectives, currently embodied in the organisation’s vision, statement of purpose, and six strategic directions of the Strategic Plan 2008-2013.

The Museum Victoria collection, comprising some 16 million items, covers various disciplines in the sciences, history and technology, and Indigenous cultures. The collections are held at four major facilities: Melbourne Museum, Scienceworks, Immigration Museum and the Moreland Annexe. Further information on the scope of the Museum’s collections and research effort can be found on the Museum Victoria website: http://www.museumvictoria.com.au/Collections-Research/

In 2009, Museum Victoria will participate in celebrations to mark the anniversary of Charles Darwin’s birth 200 years ago, and the publication of his Origin of the Species 150 years ago. The Museum will be participating in a wide program of events to mark the anniversary, including a major international conference, Evolution: the Experience, to be organised by the University of Melbourne and held on 8-14 February 2009, and the Charles Darwin Anniversary temporary display in the Darwin to DNA Gallery at Melbourne Museum from December 2008-May 2009. The Thomas Ramsay Science and Humanities Committee will also be particularly interested in proposals which are linked with these important anniversaries.

The Fellowship project should result in the production of a substantial piece of work such as scholarly publications, electronic publication forms, and Museum public programs.

Priority in awarding the Fellowship will be given to Australian citizens or residents.

The candidate awarded the Fellowship will be expected to take up the position during the 2008 calendar year.
