Research programme
The flexicurity concept is considered a key concept within the European Employment Strategy. The concept is used to describe a labour market system that aims at combining flexibility in employment relations with an adequate level of security for the dependent labour force. A major role is attributed to the social partners in designing flexicurity. At this moment, flexicurity is to be organised at the national level. The increased geographical openness of the labour market challenges this national orientation. This raises several questions. In the PhD proposal the question should be addressed whether autonomous regulation, in the form of collective labour agreements or other collective arrangements, hinders or promotes the internal market. Which standards does EC law impose on autonomous regulation and how does this affect the role of the social partners and the design of flexicurity within the national labour market and social security systems?
