Job Description : The Signal Processing and Speech Communication (SPSC) Laboratory at Graz University of Technology (TU Graz, http://www.tugraz.at) in Graz, Austria, has immediate openings for two PhD student positions. TU Graz has been founded in 1811 and its SPSC Lab (http://www.spsc.tugraz.at/) in 2000.

Since then, this lab has grown to 25+ fulltime researchers from 15 nationalities, working in the fields of nonlinear signal processing, mixed-signal circuits and systems, UWB communications, machine learning and adaptive systems, speech communication, and microphone array processing. SPSC students have won 10 best student paper awards at top international conferences since 2004, filed more than 20 patents in the same period, and receive funding in the framework of several excellence programs like the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Nonlinear Signal Processing, the Competence Network for Advanced Speech Technologies, the National Research Network on Signal and Information Processing in Science and Engineering, and the Competence Centers for Excellent Technologies project Advanced Audio Processing.

The two current openings for PhD students are in the following areas:

Digital amplifier concepts for highly efficient next generation radio base stations:
Radio base stations currently consume the major part of the total energy consumption in radio access networks, where a big portion of the power loss stems from inefficient power amplifiers. Future mobile standards like long term evolution (LTE) are deteriorating the low energy efficiency of the amplifiers. Therefore, new concepts have to be found to improve the energy efficiency of RF high-power amplifiers without reducing the needed dynamic range at the output.

System concepts for next generation integrated cellular CMOS transmitters:
In the field of cellular transceivers design, there is a growing interest in reorganizing the analog and RF functions in order to perform them as much as possible in the digital domain, to exploit the benefits of process scaling. In the transmitter, standard homodyne architectures will be replaced by fully digital transmitters with switched-mode power amplifiers driven by a digital modulator combined with adaptive nonlinear predistortion. The efficiency of the PA has to be improved substantially to achieve or even exceed the GaAs reference benchmark. Therefore new transmitter architectures have to be found that are based on disruptive system and signal processing concepts.

Applicants should have a strong background in signal processing and communications as well as an excellent MSc degree in Electrical and Information Engineering, Computer Science, Telematics, or Mathematics. Fluency in English or German is a must. Applications in electronic form should include a Curriculum Vitae, Transcript of Records, all publications and the MSc Thesis.

TU Graz aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially as far as the gender structure is concerned. Applications will be evaluated starting March 14, 2010, until all positions are filled.
