UC College of Business and Economics Maori and Pacifica Awards for Excellence, New Zealand
Job Description: These awards were established by the University of Canterbury College of Business and Economics in 2006 to recognise academic and extracurricular achievement of students from secondary schools within New Zealand of either M?ori or Pasifika descent. The first awards were made for tenure in 2007.
1. The awards shall be known as the College of Business and Economics Awards for
Excellence.
2. The awards shall be made to students who are New Zealand citizens or permanent residents
of M?ori or Pasifika descent, who are about to begin their first year of a Bachelor of
Commerce undergraduate degree programme at the University of Canterbury, and who
attended a secondary school in New Zealand in the year of application.
3. Up to four awards shall be made annually, two each to students of M?ori descent and
students of Pasifika descent enrolling in a Bachelor of Commerce. Awards will not be made
when there are no candidates of sufficient merit.
4. Each award shall be tenable for one year and shall normally be taken up in the year following
application. A scholar may defer taking up the scholarship for up to one year for the purpose
of an appropriate gap year.
5. The awards shall be made by the Academic Board, on the recommendation of a selection
panel comprising the following staff of the College of Business and Economics:
a) the Pro-Vice-Chancellor;
b) the College Manager;
c) the Academic Manager;
d) the External Relations Director.
6. The awards shall be made on the following criteria:
a) quality of achievement in the applicant’s NCEA level 2 or 3 results or equivalent
qualifications; plus
b) evidence of the applicant’s leadership potential; plus
c) involvement in sport, cultural and/or community activities; plus
d) evidence of the applicant’s contribution to school activities.
7. The awards may not be held with any other scholarship or award that comprises payment of
tuition fees.
8. The Council may, on the recommendation of the Academic Board, withdraw an award at any
time if satisfied that the student is not diligently pursuing the prescribed course. The University
may then require a full or partial refund of the award.
9. Each award will be credited directly to the student’s fees account at the time of enrolment in
the Bachelor of Commerce.
10. A condition of acceptance is that each scholar agrees to the University publicising their name,
background information provided by the scholar or their school and/or a photograph, and to be reasonably available for any promotional activity surrounding the scholarship.
