UK-India Scholarship for Masters by Research at University of Nottingham UK

July 10, 2008

UK-IEREI Scholarship for Masters by Research (MRes)

University of Nottingham

A unique opportunity to participate in a fully-funded (tuition fees and stipend of £12,600) project. This project will investigate nematode (C. elegans) responses to chemical stress using a range of stress-promoter::GFP reporter strains representing multiple output genes involved in defensive pathways. Quantification of GFP fluorescence can provide a rapid-throughput measure of reporter expression. This work is linked to an overarching UK-IERI-funded project that aims to build a predictive mathematical model describing the overall behaviour of the interlinked stress-response network (SRN). There will be two opportunities to visit the partner research institutions in India that are also involved in this project - both visits fully funded from the UK-IERI grant. One of these will involve collaborative gene-array studies to be conducted with Professor Pradip Sinha at IIT Kanpur; the other will involve toxicant-residue analysis with Dr D. Kar Chowdhuri at IITR Lucknow. This project will offer a unique opportunity to experience the vibrant research scene at top Indian institutes.

This MRes programme will consist of the research project lasting around ten and a half months under the direct supervision of Dr David de Pomerai. The latter is worth 160 teaching credits. In addition, 20 credits should be accumulated through non-assessed generic training to improve general and transferable skills for the workplace. The research project will be assessed by a dissertation of a maximum of 35,000 words. Submission of the final dissertation for examination should be within one year of start date.

This Scholarship award is open only to a UK/EU citizen who is available to start the project in September 2008.

Candidates must have at least a 2.1 (Honours) degree in Biology or Genetics and must be willing to make two brief (~ 2 week) visits to our partner insititutions in India, namely IIT Kanpur and IITR Lucknow during the course. The School will pay the travel expenses for the trips to India.
