Development of Analytical Methods to Derive Hydrophobicity Parameters for use as Descriptors for the Prediction of the Environmental and Human Health Risk of Chemicals (in Collaboration with Unilever). There is a requirement to perform risk assessment from the potential exposure to chemicals by humans and in the environment. There is a growing emphasis on computational (and other) alternatives in ecotoxicology and toxicology. The proposed research in the School of Pharmacy and Chemistry at Liverpool John Moores University will develop analytical chemistry techniques utilising HPLC and immobilised artificial membranes (IAM) to assess the hydrophobicity of selected chemicals. The derived hydrophobicity parameters will be used as a better model of the uptake, or bioavailability, of compounds. This will assist in the development of relationships between the biological activity of a compound and its physico-chemical and / or structural properties (i.e. quantitative structure-activity relationships (QSARs)). The aim of this project is to evaluate and develop further tools for the prediction of toxicity from these novel measurements of hydrophobicity to improve the risk assessment of chemicals using more robust predictive methods. This project is funded by Unilever and the successful candidate will be expected to undertake some work at their Safety and Environmental Assurance Centre (SEAC) in Sharnbrook, near Bedford, England. The tax-free PhD stipend is for three years and starts at £12,940 in the first year rising to approximately £13,700 in the third year. The anticipated start date is 1st August 2008 or thereabouts. Interviews are provisionally scheduled for the week commencing 7th April 2008 Applicants should be EU citizens due to funding restrictions and have, or be about to obtain, either: at least an upper second Honours degree in any suitable biological, chemical, biochemical, toxicological or computational science, or a related field; or a relevant Masters degree. . Informal enquiries to Mark Cronin (m.t.cronin@ljmu.ac.uk), QSAR and Modelling Group, School of Pharmacy and Chemistry, Liverpool John Moores University, Byrom Street, Liverpool, L3 3AF, England. Tel. 0151 231 2402. Applications should be in the form of a letter of application outlining your interest in the position (maximum one page) and a C.V. (maximum two pages) including the names of two referees. Applications should be submitted to Prof Mark Cronin by 5pm (local time) 28 March 2008.
