Introduction:
PrimerDesign is a University spin out company specialising in the supply of assays, kits and reagents for use in real-time PCR. The company contains a unique level of expertise and provides services and products of the very highest quality.
To date PrimerDesign has been able to support a large number of research projects in numerous UK universities to a degree that is simply unheard of in the Biotech industry. This has led to the publication of exceptional quality data in very high impact journals.
PrimerDesign would like to promote this model of a mutually beneficial collaboration in other institutions across the country.
The proposal is for PrimerDesign to sponsor a student in a number of institutions via the injection of sponsorship and training in exchange for some basic publicity within the institution.

Sponsorship of Project
Students will typically be involved in a project with a substantial real-time PCR component. The sponsorship scheme can be written in to grant proposals and similar funding exercises.

The student/group will receive

1 days hands on training in real-time PCR at their institution by a PrimerDesign representative (commercial value (£500).
£450 worth of real-time PCR reagents from PrimerDesign as and when required.
£500 worth of custom designed real-time PCR assays from PrimerDesign as and when required.
A free geNorm kit (housekeeping gene selection kit) with a value of £340. This kit significantly improves accuracy of subsequent real-time PCR data attained.
Free housekeeping gene detection kits for the duration of the project.

The above is intended for use by the student but can be used by the group as a whole at the discretion of the student supervisor.
Total sponsorship value: > £2000. Kits, reagents and training will be provided without the exchange of funds and will be organised by agreement between Dr J Wicks (Project Manager PrimerDesign) and the students supervisor.
Further benefits for the Student
In line with the government’s ideas regarding knowledge transfer between Industry and Academia, the student will gain tangible industrial experience via the relationship with PrimerDesign.
The student will be asked to organise and promote a seminar for real-time PCR users at the institution. The seminar is entitled “Improving Standards in Real-Time PCR” and will be presented by an expert speaker from PrimerDesign. The opportunity will also provide excellent CV material via the tangible commercial experience gained by a relationship with PrimerDesign.
