THE KIMBERLEY DEVELOPMENT COMMISSION RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 2007/2008

Two annual Scholarships, of $10,000 each, are available to support individuals to undertake undergraduate or postgraduate research with expected outcomes that will promote sustainable development in the Kimberley.

The Kimberley Development Commission administers the Research Scholarship Program.

2    OBJECTIVES OF THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The over-riding objectives of the Commission’s Scholarship Program are to:
promote undergraduate and postgraduate research which yields regional benefits in the Kimberley;
establish the Kimberley as a region which promotes academic excellence by facilitating, encouraging and supporting Kimberley people to undertake research inside or outside the region, which may subsequently be used for the advancement of sustainable development within the Kimberley.

3    ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR RESEARCHERS

Both Scholarships will be awarded to individuals who are able to demonstrate an ability to meet the following criteria:
holds Australian Citizenship or Permanent Residency;
has long standing affiliation with the Kimberley through personal and/or professional association;
is committed to the sustainable development of the region;
has appropriate qualifications and/or experience to conduct the proposed research;
has confirmed access to appropriate academic support, supervision and advice for the duration of the research timeline, through enrolment in, or affiliation with an Australian University;
is committed to cross-cultural collaboration and achieving equitable outcomes for Indigenous people;
is able to complete the research within two years of receipt of the scholarship;
has the ability to independently fund outstanding costs of research; and
has the ability to travel within or outside the Kimberley to conduct the research.

4    ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA FOR RESEARCH TOPICS / RESEARCH PARAMETERS

Research Scholarship topics will be selected on the basis of their ability to meet a minimum of two of the following regionally specific criteria:
promotes cross-cultural collaboration and outcomes which contribute toward Indigenous equity;
contributes toward effective and efficient resource usage;
promotes intra generational and inter generational equity;
promotes skills and knowledge transfer;
advances World Best Practice in cultural security, industry, science or the arts, relevant to the region.

The Research Topic must be consistent with the Kimberley Development Commission’s ten year strategic aims as identified in the Commission’s most recent Corporate Plan (available on the Commission’s website: www.kimberley.wa.gov.au).
