Job Description: The main purpose of the Scholarship is to enable students to study full-time for a Doctorate in a health-related area.

Selection process:

* Applicants must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents.
* Applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for registration for a doctorate as described in the statutes of the University and will need to have an appropriate research programme in a health-related area and provide evidence that it has been accepted by the proposed supervisor and the Head of the Department in which the Research is to be carried out.
* The basis of selection will be academic merit, the proposed area of research, and the ability of the University to provide adequate supervision and access to resources.

How do students apply?
Application for the Scholarships must be made on the application form available from the Scholarships Office. The completed application form is to be submitted to the Scholarships Office no later than 1 November. Late applications will not be considered.

Decision makers
The Scholarships will be awarded by the University of Auckland Council upon the recommendation of a subcommittee of Postgraduate and Scholarships Committee comprising the Postgraduate Dean (or nominee); the DVC (research) or nominee, two representatives from the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences, and one representative from each of the Faculties of Arts and Science.

How and when do students learn of the decision?
Approximately six weeks after closing date by letter.

What conditions are attached to acceptance of this award?
The University of Auckland Health Research Doctoral Scholarship must be taken up within 3 months of acceptance of the award. The University of Auckland Health Research Doctoral Scholarship may not be held concurrently with any postgraduate scholarship awarded by the New Zealand Vice-Chancellor’s Committee unless the University of Auckland Council so approves. However, it may be held with any other study award or grant where the regulations for that award or grant permit and where the University of Auckland Council so approves. If the value of co-tenured scholarships exceeds $35,000 the emolument for The University of Auckland Health Research Doctoral Scholarship will be reduced to limit the co-tenured total to $35,000. To comply with the fulltime study requirement in regulation 2, the amount of additional and paid work a Scholar may undertake either inside or outside the University shall not exceed a total of 500 hours in a calendar year. The University of Auckland Council has power to terminate or suspend a Scholarship, if it receives an unsatisfactory report on the progress of a Scholar from the Head of the host Department or Institute.

Additional Information

* The University of Auckland Council is not obliged to make an award if in any year there is no candidate of sufficient merit.
* Compulsory fees are those only related to the relevant Doctoral study, plus Student Services Fee and Building Levy.
* Notes:
* (i) Students who have been offered a scholarship must meet all requirements for admission into their intended programme in order to take up the scholarship offer.
* (ii) Compulsory fees are those only related to the relevant Doctoral study, plus Student Services Fee and Building Levy.
* (iii) Recipients of University of Auckland Health Research Doctoral Scholarships are normally required to be enrolled on a full-time basis. However, domestic students for whom socially compelling reasons make part-time enrolment preferable may apply to hold a scholarship on a part-time basis. Socially compelling reasons could include a) carer responsibilities for: one or more pre-school children; school-aged children as a sole parent with limited access to outside support; an invalid or disabled partner, child or parent; or b) medical condition(s), impairment(s) or disabilities. Applicants will not be granted permission to hold a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship on a part-time basis if they wish to undertake full-time paid employment or substantial part-time employment. Students who hold a scholarship on a part-time basis are subject to the same employment restrictions as full-time scholarship holders (Refer Regulation 9 and Notes ix and x) and are required to change to full-time enrolment if a change in their circumstances means they no longer qualify to hold the scholarship on a part-time basis.
* (iv) Part-time scholars will be paid on a pro-rata basis and the hours of additional and paid work a scholarship recipient can undertake will be similarly calculated.
* (v) Students are required to begin their studies by 1 December in the year of the award.
* (vi) Students who are offered and decline a University of Auckland Health Research Doctoral Scholarship are eligible to apply again at a later date provided they have not held some other doctoral scholarship in the interim.
* (vii) Each year recipients of University of Auckland Health Research Doctoral Scholarships must sign a statutory declaration that, in the previous academic year, they have complied with the regulations for the Scholarship and that they give an undertaking that, in the current academic year, they will notify the University of any change in their enrolment status. The University of Auckland may, in the event it can be established that a recipient of a University of Auckland Health Research Doctoral Scholarship is not complying with these regulations, terminate the Scholarship and require repayment of the funds received from the date of the breach.
* (viii) A further six months scholarship funding, provided by The University of Auckland and subject to Scholarship Sub-committee approval, may be available..
* (ix) Students may only defer their University of Auckland Health Research Doctoral scholarship funding for up to one year during the tenure of the scholarship.
* (x) To ensure equity and compliance with scholarship provisions, Graduate Teaching Assistant appointments are co-ordinated with scholarship receipt. Graduate Teaching Assistants (half time) may not hold a University of Auckland Health Research Doctoral. In the event of award after the appointment date, the appointee MUST inform the Head of Department and the Scholarship Office.
* (xi) Paid work that is required as part of an approved doctoral programme (such as the internship for third year DClinPsy students), is not counted towards the 500 hours of additional and paid work that a Scholar may undertake while in receipt of a scholarship.
* (xii) DClinPsy students enrolled in the DClinPsy internship year may apply to the Scholarships Office for a stipend. If they provide evidence to the Scholarships Office that their net internship salary is less than the value of The University of Auckland Health Research Doctoral Scholarship they will receive a stipend to bring their income up to the value of the scholarship.
