PHD student position (insulin signaling and apoptosis)
The successful candidate will be involved in investigating the role of insulin signaling (and the lack thereof) in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. The main focus will be related to cell survival and apoptosis of podocytes in the kidney. The research is done in a highly collaborative network with leading labs in Switzerland and in the US. Unique tools are available for the successful candidate like a transgenically rescued insulin receptor knockout mouse and a podocyte cell line derived from them. For knockdown and overexpression of genes we use a lentiviral system which allows us to dissect the molecular mechanisms. The project was judged to be “original, novel, important and timely” by the Swiss National Science Foundation and is funded for 3 years by SNF.

Education Applicants must hold an academic degree in natural sciences (MSc or equivalent) acceptable for matriculation as a PhD student at a Swiss University. The successful candidate would be supported by an annual stipend of roughly 38,000 Swiss Franks.
