Graduate Research in Behavioral Evolution of Stalk-Eyed Flies

I have an opening for a Ph. D. graduate student interested in researchon the performance and fitness consequences of elaborate secondary sexualcharacters in insects using stalk-eyed flies as a model.  Stalk-eyed fliesprovide the ideal model system to test for costs and tradeoffs relatedto male ornamentation. All species in this extraordinary family displayexaggerated head morphology, with eyes and antennae displaced at theend of long stalks, and interspecific variation in eye span can be morethan ten-fold. Furthermore, all available evidence indicates that eyestalks are critical sexual signals used in both male-male competitionand female choice. This study will examine the effects of elongatedeye stalks on flight performance and survivorship of stalk-eyed fliesto assess whether these effects run counter to the effects of sexualselection. The position is part of an NSF-funded CAREER project in thelaboratory of John Swallow (http://www.usd.edu/~jswallow/index.html),Biology Department, University of South Dakota. Opportunities exist todevelop a PhD research program that cover a variety of related issues(flight performance, flight energetics, predation avoidance) but I amparticularly interested in finding someone to be involved in a series ofmesocosm predation studies.  Support will be a combination of Teachingand Research Assistantships.
