University of Vienna PhD Position Announcement
The Department of Methods in the Social Sciences of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Vienna announces the opening for a PhD position (Pre-doc) (40 hours per week) from September 1, 2008 (or earlier if necessary), appointed for a period of four years.
The University of Vienna is the oldest university in the German-speaking world and one of the largest universities of Central Europe. 63,000 students are currently enrolled at the University which offers about 130 degree programmes, among them 18 Bachelor programmes und 27 Master programmes.
The Department of Methods in the Social Sciences is a newly created sub-institution at the Faculty of Social Sciences. Its tasks are to provide methods training to students and researchers of the Departments of Political Science, Sociology and Communication and to develop research and methods in the field of Social Sciences. Interdisciplinary work and collaboration with the different departments of the faculty is central to the work of the Department. The Departments research focuses in particular on electoral behaviour, public opinion, democratic representation and Europeanisation of party politics.
Due to the Departments research interest the candidates should have an interest in the aforementioned research areas, as well as a well trained expertise in quantitative research methods and statistics. Candidates are expected to be able to teach a course in one of the subfields mentioned. The teaching load is at most two units (= 1 lecture) per academic semester (October-January, March-June).
In addition to proficiency in English, fluency in German is considered an important asset, but not a condition, although candidates who are not functionally fluent in German will be expected to become so within two years.
Applicants must hold a Diploma or Masters certificate in political science, sociology, or another field in the social sciences, and have a strong interest in quantitative research methods.
The candidate will be appointed for a period of four years. Based on full time employment, the gross income will be 24.098 per year, increasing by gross 669 for each teaching unit.
Candidates are expected to write a PhD within the four years (20 hours reserved for the candidates research activities).
