The role of institutions and social preferences in the allocation of entrepreneurial ability.

The PhD?position will be in the Utrecht University’s focus research area ‘The Impact and Origins of Institutions’. The PhD?researcher will actively participate in an international project that includes research institutions in Belgium and Germany. For experimental studies, the PhD?researcher will be affiliated to ELSE Utrecht (Experimental Laboratory for Sociology and Economics), which is a joint laboratory of USE and of the Department of Sociology in Utrecht. Research will be embedded in USE’s Tjalling Koopmans Instituut (TKI). The PhD?candidate will be able to dedicate 90 percent of the time to the research project and 10 percent to teaching.

Job description: The PhD?researcher will be part of a research project that experimentally analyzes the allocation of entrepreneurial talent. The project will be conducted in several countries and studies the underlying institutional drivers of the allocation of entrepreneurial resources across different types of economic activity. In order to isolate several levels of institutional effects from those of preferences and risk attitudes, the project also analyzes social preferences and social risk?taking in the presence of negative externalities. With regard to methodology, the researcher will primarily use economic experiments and statistical analysis to study these topics. With regard to research areas, the project covers topics in entrepreneurship and in institutional economics.

The candidate preferably has successfully completed a two?year (research) master’s degree. The most obvious candidate for the position has such a degree in economics. However, candidates with a strong analytical background in business,sociology or psychology are also encouraged to apply. The candidate has a strong and proven interest in experimental methods and statistics. Additionally, sound knowledge in at least one of the following areas is a plus: entrepreneurship,new institutional theory, cognitive psychology. The candidate is able to work in an interdisciplinary group of researchers and can communicate both to a technical as well as non?technical audience.

We offer a temporary employment of 1,0 fte (three years) in a stimulating research climate and an enjoyable working environment in the innercity of Utrecht, the Netherlands. The research is expected to completeall requirements for the PhD?degree within this period. The salary for a full?time appointment is € 2,000.? gross per month in the first year and is expected to increase to € 2,441.? in the third year, contingent on a satisfactory performance.
