Scholarship Description:

  • Study Subject: The Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies (CES) at Harvard University invites postdoctoral scholars from Sciences Po to apply for two opportunities:
  • Visiting Scholars Program 2018-2019 with funding available through the Sciences Po-CES Exchange Agreement.
  • Scholarship Award: The program offers postdoctoral social scientists and historians the opportunity to spend up to one year at Harvard University for independent research on Europe or transatlantic relations. The Center considers candidates from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, including economics, history, political science, and sociology.
  • Kennedy Memorial Fellowship: In 2016, the fellowship was expanded to support one additional postdoctoral scholar from other EU member states. The fellowship provides a stipend of $60,000 for 10 months of residential research between September and June. Fellowship recipients join other visiting researchers at CES as part of the Visiting Scholars Program.
  • Kennedy Fellowship for EU nationals offering a $60,000 stipend to participate in the CES Visiting Scholars Program.

  • Number of Scholarships: Through the John F. Kennedy Memorial Fellowship established in 1966 as an endowment with funds from the German Government, each year CES supports up to three postdoctoral scholars from Germany.

Eligibility for the Scholarship: 

Eligible Countries: Students from EU countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Republic of Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the UK) are eligible to apply for this scholarship programme.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants to the CES Visiting Scholars Program must:

  • Pursue an independent project on modern Europe or transatlantic relations in history or the social sciences.
  • Possess a PhD at the time of application.
  • Be prepared to be in residence locally for a minimum of three months (at least two months must be during the academic year).
  • Preference is given to faculties who have not already spent a significant period at Harvard University.

Kennedy Memorial Fellowship

The German Kennedy Memorial Fellowship is offered to scholars who are:

  • Citizens of a European Union member state other than Germany.
  • Post-doctoral social scientists who are working on modern Europe or transatlantic relations in history or the social sciences.
  • Possess a PhD at the time of application.
  • Have completed their PhD degree no more than 8 years prior to the application and have a track record of publications.
  • Be prepared to be in residence locally for 10 months from September 2018 to June 2019; applicants may not hold concurrent appointments.
  • Have an excellent command of English.
  • Preference is given to applicants who intend to pursue academic careers in Europe.

English Language Requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.

How to Apply: Applicants who wish to be considered for the 2018-2019 academic year should submit the following materials by December 15, 2017, to emmanuelle.narcisse-at-sciencespo.fr (The subject line of the message should be: “CES Harvard Application”):

  • Cover letter including requested dates of residence. (Note: University appointments have a minimum of three months and a maximum of one year.)
  • Current curriculum vitae, not to exceed five pages.
  • Title and 3-5 page description of research or project to be carried out at CES.
  • A 150-word abstract of the research project.
  • In the case of non-native English speakers: TOEFL scores or a brief, signed a letter attesting to competency in spoken and written English.
  • Two letters of recommendation are also required.

Kennedy Memorial Fellowship
