University of Hohenheim’s Food Security Center (FSC) and its collaboration partners award a Visiting Scholarship for a PhD Student/ Postdoctoral Researcher
The Food Security Center (FSC) is a newly established university center of excellence in development collaboration at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart, Germany. FSC is one of five excellence centers of the program “exceed – Higher Education Excellence in Development Cooperation,” which is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funds of the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) of Germany. The
center’s mission is to make effective and innovative scientific contributions in research, teaching, and policy advice to eradicate hunger and achieve food security in collaboration with partner Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and national and international development organizations. Thematically, FSC’s activities deal with issues of (sustainable) food availability, (economic) food access, food use, and food utilization. More information is available from www.foodsecurity.de.
Scholarship description
FSC and its collaboration partners award one visiting ‘Sandwich’ scholarship for a PhD student or postdoctoral researcher from a developing country for a period of three to twelve month, starting November 2009. The center wishes to attract an outstanding and innovative PhD student or postdoctoral fellow planning a career in academia or development collaboration. The scholarship aims at increasing her/his previously gained scientific knowledge and skills relevant for food security related issues. The successful candidate will receive a scholarship for conducting PhD
thesis related research studies in collaboration with the research staff of a partner university, research center, or development organization located in a developing country. Objective of the collaboration is at least one joint, peer-reviewed journal publication or paper to be presented at an international conference that contributes to FSC’s mission and is relevant for her/his PhD thesis/postdoctoral works. She/he is also expected to present research proposal, state of research, and preliminary results in the partner institution’s seminars/workshops. Furthermore, FSC and its partners aim at establishing an active, long-lasting collaboration with the PhD students/postdoctoral fellow and her/his home institution. The scholarship is given for a stay at a partner institution located in a developing country. The monthly grant equals a net amount of 400 Euros in 2009 and 500 Euros in 2010. For a stay above six month, documented costs for research and study materials up to 460 Euros can be covered by FSC. In addition, FSC pays for traveling to/from the partner institution. Health insurance and other potential costs must be paid privately.
Required skills
- MSc degree (or at least equivalent degree) in agricultural, nutritional, natural, social, economic,
or political sciences or related disciplines with specification on food security related issues
- Outstanding study performance (i.e. excellent or very good MSc grade)
- Nationality of a developing country according to DAC list (preferred from Africa or Asia)
- Excellence in oral and written English language (TOEFL test is required for non-native English
speakers)
- Ability to conduct innovative research
- Excellent interpersonal skills and team spirit
- Ability to work well in an interdisciplinary, multicultural environment and with individuals from
different scientific, societal, and cultural backgrounds and organizations from the public, private,
and civil society sector

detailed resume, proposal (maximum 1000 words) specifying your planned activities during your
stay, summary of MSc/PhD thesis (maximum 1000 words), and two letters of references to
fsc@uni-hohenheim.de. Proposals must be developed in collaboration with and formally agreed by
the supervisor at the partner institution.
Deadline for application is October 15, 2009 (12 pm CET).
