Engage Junior Research Fellow at Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun
The Wildlife Institute of India (WII) is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoE&F), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research. The WII wishes to engage 03 Junior Research Fellows through a Walk-in-Interview to be held on Monday, 30th March 2009. The details of the positions along with essential and desirable qualifications, terms and conditions and how to apply are given below.
Details of project and position
Project Title, details of position and duration
Study of impacts of biotic disturbances on birds in western Himalayas and development of bird-habitat monitoring protocol.
(01 – JRF)
Duration: Two years.
Essential Qualification
Masters degree in (Botany/Zoology/Forestry/Life Science/Experimental Biology/ Environment Sciences/Biological Sciences/Wildlife Sciences or any subject relevant to Wildlife Sciences) with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks, from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Candidate should have good skills in bird identification and a decent knowledge of their vocalizations also. Familiarity with birds of Western Himalayas would be an added qualification. Candidate should be ready to spend considerably long stretches of time in difficult conditions in the forests of Western Himalayas.
Description of Work
The task in the field would primarily involve collecting bird and vegetation data, analyzing it, as given below:
Birds – To conduct point transect surveys to collect information on density and diversity of birds in different disturbance regimes in the study area of Himalayan foothills of Uttarakhand and adjoining Uttar Pradesh.
Vegetation – To quantify vegetation structure and composition parameters like plant species diversity and foliage height diversity through measurements in vegetation plots.
Analysis and report writing – To analyse data and write report.
Project Title, details of position and duration
Conservation of the endangered Asiatic Wild Dog Cuon alpinus in Western Arunachal Pradesh: linking ecology, ethnics and economics to foster better coexistence.
(02 – JRF)
Duration: Three years.
Essential Qualification
Masters degree in Wildlife Science/Animal Science/Zoology/Ecology/ Environmental Sciences/ Environment Management with a minimum of 60% aggregate marks from a recognized University.
Desirable Qualification
Prior experience in animal census techniques, habitat assessment techniques, radio-telemetry, community based conservation efforts, and be familiar with the conservation issues of Arunachal Pradesh and eastern Himalayan biodiversity hotspot.
Description of Work
To study the ecology of dholes for the first time in this geographic range and initiate conservation efforts. The results of the work will attempt to ensure long-term survival of dholes and resolving conflicts with local people in Arunachal Pradesh. The Work involves extensive surveying and field data collection in biologically and socio-culturally rich state of Arunachal Pradesh.
GENERAL:
The age of the candidate shall not be more than 28 years as on 25th March 2009. Upper age limit for JRF may be relaxed up to 5 years, as in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC/Women and physically handicapped categories.
Selected candidate for the position of Junior Research Fellows (JRF) will be paid consolidated emoluments of Rs. 12,000/- per month.
Research personnel may be allowed hostel accommodation at the institute, as per availability. Where the hostel accommodation is not possible, house rent allowance (HRA) will be paid as per the rules of the Institute subject to the condition that HRA payable, in no case, shall be more than the rates payable to Central Govt./WII Employee(s) in that area. Other allowances and benefits to the research personnel would be admissible as per the rules of the Institute, amended from time to time.
Engagement on the above positions will be purely on a temporary basis initially and may be extended for further period depending upon the requirement and the tenure of project.
The selection of the candidates will be based on Walk-in-Interview to be held on Monday, 30th March 2009 at the Wildlife Institute of India, Dehra Dun.

The `Walk in Interview’ will be conducted on 30th March 2009 and the registration of candidates will begin by 09:00 A.M. onwards.
Candidates should bring the duly filled-in applications with attested true copies of testimonials of educational qualifications, research experience, extra curricular activities, date of birth etc., along with copies of mark sheets of all examinations. All original documents should be produced at the time of registration.
Applications without enclosures and/or incomplete in any respect shall be liable to rejection.
Two way travel expenses will be paid to the candidates, selected for the project. The expense will be limited to actual 2nd class rail/bus fare by the shortest route from his/her place of stay/residence.
The Institute will not provide accommodation for candidates appearing for the interview.
