2010-11 Women and Public Policy Program -International Security Program Fellowship, Harvard Kennedy School, USA

In the academic year 2010-2011, the Women and Public Policy Program at the Harvard Kennedy School will be awarding one postdoctoral residential fellowship to an outstanding scholar in security affairs from the United States or elsewhere working to promote basic research in the broad area of international security with a particular focus on issues relating to gender. This fellow must hold a Ph.D. by September 2010. The fellow will hold his or her fellowship jointly with the International Security Program (ISP) of the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs (Belfer Center).

For 2008-2009, the fellowship was awarded to Dr. Megan Mackenzie, a political scientist who will conduct a comparative analysis of the existing policies and programs created to address children born of war time rape and AIDS orphans in Sierra Leone and Uganda.

Responsibilities:

The Women and Public Policy Program / International Security Program Fellow will be expected to participate actively in the weekly WAPPP and ISP seminars and also in the intellectual life of the two centers, taking part in seminars relevant to their interests and presenting papers. Research fellows will also be expected to complete a book, monograph, scholarly article or other significant publication during their period of residence.

Stipend:

The stipend for the 2010-2011 academic year postdoctoral fellowship is $34,000. Residential fellowships also provide for individual health insurance and institutional support.

Applications:

Applicants for the Women and Public Policy Program / International Security Program Fellowship should submit one complete copy of the items below:

A cover letter with current e-mail address and home address.
A current curriculum vitae (including publications).
A 1500-word description of the proposed research project, and a statement indicating the need for postdoctoral support. This proposal should include the background, nature, importance, specific objectives, and methodology of the proposed research.
One or two unbound samples of writing. If possible, these should be pertinent to the application.
Three letters of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s professional competence.
Please also indicate whether we may forward your application to other programs who we think may be interested in your work.

Selection Process:

Applications must be received in hard copy by WAPPP no later than January 31, 2011 for a fellowship beginning the following September. Applications will be reviewed by a faculty selection committee, and awards will be announced by early April. While being considered for a Women and Public Policy Program fellowship, you may be informed that you have received another fellowship. We would appreciate you passing this information along to us.

Notification Process:
