Part of a network of 4 studentships and eight research supervisors across the universities of Hull, York, Sheffield, and Leeds- Adapting Transport Systems: Towards a Low Carbon Future.

Session 2010-2011 – Closing date 31 March 2010

This project will examine the governance challenges involved in switching from fossil fuel-dependent land uses and transportation to low-carbon alternatives across the Yorkshire and Humber region. Although the UK is committed to developing low-carbon alternatives, the impact of this transition on city and regional governance arrangements involving the public and private sector is poorly understood. The aim of this project is to use examples of the interface between land use, transportation and environmental policy and to explore different models of governance, with a view to identifying models that are more appropriate to a low carbon future. The research will include an evaluation of the capacity of the region to learn from models of city-regional governance in other contexts where low carbon land use and transportation alternatives are already being adopted, including US and European city-regions.

The University of Hull is a leading centre for research in Geography and Environmental Governance, with 90% of research in the Geography Department rated as international in RAE 2008. Further information on the Department is available at: http://www.hull.ac.uk/geog/. The University’s provision for postgraduate students (and other relevant advice about postgraduate life, accommodation and progression) is outlined at: http://www2.hull.ac.uk/student/graduateschool.aspx. The successful student will also have the opportunity to interact with students and staff at the University of York’s inter-disciplinary Environment Department: http://www.york.ac.uk/depts/eeem/; and the international Stockholm Research Institute: http://sei-international.org/index.php/about-sei.

Training provision for the student

A wide ranging postgraduate training scheme is in place in Hull which all research students must complete. This includes professional development activities as well as subject specific modules. The PhD position itself will provide a broad spectrum of training for the student.

Entry Requirements

UK/EU applicants only. Applicants will be expected to hold a minimum of a UK upper second class Honours degree, or equivalent, in Geography, Environmental Studies or a cognate discipline. A social science background is desirable. Candidates with a relevant Masters degree will be at an advantage. Non-native English speakers must meet the University’s English language requirements. A one page research proposal must be included with the application form.

The studentship provides Home/EU tuition fees, an annual maintenance grant of £13,490 (subject to final confirmation) and a contribution towards research expenses. The studentship is renewable for three years, dependant on progress.
