Wildlife Fellowships: Welder Foundation USA

The Rob and Bessie Welder Wildlife Foundation’s graduate research fellowship program was initiated in 1956. The program is designed to promote the education of exceptionally qualified students and provide research information to manage wildlife populations. The scientific breadth of the program is suggested by the academic units of previous fellowship recipients, among them: animal behavior, biology, botany, conservation education, ecology, genetics, mammalogy, ornithology, parasitology, range science, veterinary pathology, and wildlife sciences.
Fellowships are awarded directly to properly accredited U.S. colleges or universities for bona fide graduate students who are approved candidates for M.S. or Ph.D. degrees after project proposals have been submitted to and approved by the Foundation. Academic institutions are responsible for the competitive selection and supervision of fellowship recipients, subject to Foundation approval. Students working on or near the Refuge are provided dormitory apartment living quarters, utilities, office space, computer access, and such field and laboratory facilities as are available.

I am an Indian citizen and a wildlife biologist working in government department of wildlife protection of J&K State .I possesses master’s degree in wildlife science from one of the Indian universities in 1991. I am primarily working as wildlife manager in wildlife national parks and wildlife sanctuaries for conservation and management of wildlife and their habitat from last more than 21 years. I have done 4-month course in GIS in Forest Management from Premier Indian Institute of Remote sensing Dehradun, India.
The territorial integrity of human and wildlife in the wilderness areas is disturbed due to frequent attacks of wild animals on human being and their property .It has assumed alarming prepositions in the last five years and killed many bears responsible for these attacks in retaliation by affected people. In view of increasing incidents of human –wildlife interactions that often leads to conflict between the two is dangerous for mutual survival of the two entities. I am interested to take up PhD in Wildlife-Human Interactions and Wildlife Management. If I get admission opportunity and funding support I shall be comfortable with admission in any season of the year. I would like to get enrolled in your department to carry out full time study on this aspect. I am delighted to learn that you have done quite a good work on bears and it very interesting for me because I love to work with bears .I have attempted to draft a review paper on world bears with particular reference to Himalayan Black bear in masters degree course on wildlife science.
But I am afraid I shall not be able to take up the study programme due to lack of required funds. I request you to kindly help me out of this problem and suggest how to get this study financed for full time study in USA and also the admission procedure for 2009 summer.
Due to prolonged unrest in the state, from last two decades, our forest and wildlife areas are occupied by armed forces and I am not able to take up this study there. The unrest has disturbed our economy and larger portions of state’s budget is utilized towards restoration of law and order situation .The financial resources of the state are very poor due to this prolonged unrest and studies on natural resources including wildlife is not the priority sector before the state administration in view of rebuilding of various sectors that had been seriously hit by the present unrest.
