Rewarding Science Achievement-Northwestern University management professor Benjamin F. Jones opinion-reg
Rewarding Science Achievement
"Why Science Needs a Nudge from Washington, D.C." The article makes the excellent point that today's truly great science achievements are not from individuals, but by massive groups. Part of the reason, Jones points out,
is: each new generation of scientists has to wade through so much more preexisting work before making an original contribution that it now takes measurably longer - roughly an additional year per generation - for a researcher to win a major prize or secure a patent.... most papers, projects, and patents have become team endeavors because individuals simply can't grasp all there is to know.
But while scientists are adapting, science policy - the system of awards, grants, and other inducements to experiment - is not. The community tends to celebrate individuals ..., award most of its grants to senior researchers ..., and repel people who want ... professional success before their mid-30s.
It's a short article - honestly, I've quoted nearly half of it above - but Jones does go on to outline some fairly simple solutions which would shift the focus of rewards away from individual innovation toward people who show a promise of working in a group setting, such as young grad students who might end up getting lured away into a career where they won't The alternative will be that many of the brightest of the next generation will decide that academia isn't for them, and will focus their immense talents on areas where they can make money. Granted, while recent events have shown us that many areas need these gifted innovators - I'd like to see a lot more ingenuity and brainpower at work on Wall Street, the oil industry, the automotive industry, and in politics - there's still a need for some of them to go on for advanced degrees in the sciences and perform research which is not motivated by a strict profit motive outlined by a company's research & development department.
The structure of incentives to maintain and cultivate this population of academic research scientists, and to allow them to collaborate with abandon, is something that we as a society really need to think about. What's your idea for the best way to support these scientists? If you could establish one program to help foster their work, what would it be. Have to toil for a decade or so without much appreciation have to toil for a decade or so without much appreciation?
Genearally people are dejected about the later prizes and recognition because of health problems and early achievement may encourage them considerably.Nobel prize along with additional incentives must be shared patially among the group members to enacourage the group cooperation in achieving the nobel prize goal.

Study: Quantum fluctuations are key in superconductors-Zeroing in on quantum effect
see “New Iron-based and Copper-Oxide –xenon-rubidium doping High Temperature Superconductors Share Key Magnetic properties
The findings, which are available online this week from the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, are about materials known as iron pnictides (pronounced NIK-tides). The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in pnictides a year ago is a boon for physicists who have struggled for more than two decades to explain the phenomena based on observations from a class of copper-based superconductors called cuprates (pronounced COO-prayts).
If better understood, high-temperature superconductors could be used to revolutionize electric generators, MRI scanners, high-speed trains and other devices.
The importance of magnetism to high-temperature superconductors is remarkable because magnetism strongly interferes with conventional low-temperature superconductors. “Only a few magnetic impurities in the low-temperature superconductors sap the superconducting properties away
Earlier work on the copper-oxide superconductors revealed that they consist of magnetically active copper-oxygen layers, separated by layers of non-magnetic materials. By “doping,” or adding different elements to the non-magnetic layers of this normally insulating material, researchers can manipulate the magnetism to achieve electrical conduction and then superconductivity. One of the exciting aspects of these new superconductors is that they belong to a comprehensive class of materials where many chemical substitutions are possible. This versatility is already opening up new research avenues to understand the origin of the superconductivity, and should also enable the superconducting properties to be tailored for commercial technologies. The pairing up of electrons is essential for the formation of the macroscopic quantum state giving rise to superconductivity,. "One of the leading proposals for the pairing mechanism in the iron-based superconductors is that magnetic interactions, provide the glue that binds the electrons together.
It is predicted that varying the size of some atoms in the parent compounds could allow physicists to tune the material's quantum fluctuations. These types of fluctuations can create tipping points called magnetic "quantum critical points," a state that exists when a material is at the cusp of transitioning from one quantum phase to another.
Based on what's known about electron-electron interactions and about antiferromagnetism in other metals, the authors like “sankara velayudhan nandakumar oncirculr to linearisation for polarisation for merger” based on solar magnetic field merger of 69 dynamics using doped materilas created a theoretical framework to explain the behavior of the pnictides, offering some specific predictions about how they will behave as they change phases.
Detailed studies of the magnetic excitations of materials are essential for understanding high-temperature superconductivity. Although superconductivity near absolute zero is common, only certain materials exhibit the property at "high" (i.e., the temperature of liquid nitrogen) temperatures ironnatrates doped material along with copper –rubidium –xenon may initiate a new line of thought.
A pair of laser beams (red arrows) impinges upon an ultracold gas cloud of rubidum atoms (green oval) to create synthetic magnetic fields (labeled Beff). (Inset) The beams, combined with an external magnetic field (not shown) cause the atoms to "feel" a rotational force; the swirling atoms create vortices in the gas cal for new information on magnetic field compression using ferro magnetic materials along with xenon gas.
The importance of magnetism to high-temperature (HTc) superconductors is remarkable because magnetism strongly interferes with conventional, low-temperature superconductors, but now may prove to be an integral element of HTc materials. These superconductors may one day enable energy and environmental gains by significantly improving the efficiency of electricity storage and transmission over long distances

The human brain has multiple mirror neuron systems that specialize in carrying out and understanding not just the actions of others but their intentions, the social meaning of their behavior and their emotions
Most nerve cells in the brain are comparatively pedestrian. Many specialize in detecting ordinary features of the outside world. Some fire when they encounter a horizontal line while others are dedicated to vertical lines. Others detect a single frequency of sound or a direction of movement. Mirror neurons make these complex cells look like numbskulls. Found in several areas of the brain - including the premotor cortex, the posterior parietal lobe, the superior temporal sulcus and the insula - they fire in response to chains of actions linked to intentions.Palm print really exhibit more such activity by the semi circle connecting Lunar and and Mercury mount as observed in case of cheiro famous palmist.
Internet could be best utilized for stimulating mirror neurons in meditation to achieve great powers for goodness. Now, some researchers believe that a recent discovery called mirror neurons might provide a neuroscience-based answer to those questions. Mirror neurons are a type of brain cell that respond equally when we perform an action and when we witness someone else perform the same action some researchers believe that a recent discovery called mirror neurons might provide a neuroscience-based answer to those questions. Mirror neurons are a type of brain cell that respond equally when we perform an action and when we witness someone else perform the same action. They were first discovered in the early 1990s, when a team of Italian researchers found individual neurons in the brains of macaque monkeys that fired both when the monkeys grabbed an object and also when the monkeys watched another primate grab the same object.
Neuroscientist Giacomo Rizzolatti, MD, who with his colleagues at the University of Parma first identified mirror neurons, says that the neurons could help explain how and why we "read" other people's minds and feel empathy for them. In a recent study published in PLOS Biology (Vol. 3, No. 3, pages 529-535), he and his colleagues found some evidence that they can. The researchers used fMRI to examine 23 participants as they watched videos of a hand picking up a teacup. In one video, the teacup sat on a table amid a pot of tea and plate of cookies--a signal that a tea party was under way and the hand was grasping the cup to take a sip. In the other video, the table was messy and scattered with crumbs--a sign that the party was over and the hand was clearing the table. In a third video the cup was alone, removed from any context. The researchers found that mirror neurons in the premotor cortex and other brain areas reacted more strongly to the actions embedded in the tea-party context than to the contextless scene.
Conclusion:Mirror neurons could be better utilize to cure mental depression observed by the islande formation of brain line under Saturn mount due to dark matter waves of Saturn .Mirror neurons could be utilize to erase neurological abnormalities.

As typical scenario, an electric wave packet propagating in an extremely intense laser pulse while being modified by highly charged ions and vacuum fluctuations.
In the interaction of matter with laser pulses, fundamental aspects like the quantum nature, relativity and couplings among the involved particles have become key issues and substantial challenges for the theoretical investigations of those interactions. In this section various efforts are put forward to understand in more detail the quantum mechanical interplay of all constituents of atomic, ionic and molecular systems in such laser fields. The quantum nature requires in general the solution of the electronic wave packet dynamics via the Schrödinger or Dirac equation and in many cases also the quantization of the environmental vacuum. In addition to the intuitive understanding of the processes in the laser pulses we equally aim to optimize various applications such as cooling or accelerating particles or generating coherent high-frequency light or new particles.
IBM say that they have simulated a cat\'s cerebral cortex, the thinking part of the brain, using a massive supercomputer. The computer has 147,456 processors (most modern PCs have just one or two processors) and 144 terabytes of main memory - 100,000 times as much as your computer has. The researchers created a program that told the supercomputer, which is in the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, to behave how a brain is believed to behave. The computer was shown images of corporate logos, including IBM\'s, and the scientists watched that different parts of the simulated brain worked together to figure out what the image was.

The momentum of a photon as well as its energy is directly proportional to its frequency and inversely proportional to its wavelength. For example, a 1 electron volt energy optical light photon will have 1 million times the wavelength as a photon with an energy of 1 million electron volts such as a gamma ray photon. Note that solar sails and beam sails would take the advantage of the momentum possessed by photons or particles of light. These photons or electromagnetic energy waves would either be absorbed and/or reflected from a large area, very low surface mass density, sail whereby the impinging photon stream would push the sail in a manner similar to that of the wind pushing on the wind sails of ships in centuries past and on the wind sails of modern pleasure craft and racing yachts. The H type dynamicsof ‘Uranus” could be utilised based of frequency shifts or by dampness shifts. The root locus diagram is simply acting along H type configuration in which positive and negative dampness play the role of momentum. The Mercury surface momentum involves the pi type in which only frequency is shifted.
Their first application was in realising bizarre optical properties that were first postulated in 1968 by the Russian physicist Victor Veselago . He had been studying the laws that describe light and other electromagnetic radiation which were laid down in the 19th century by the great Scottish mathematical physicist James Clerk Maxwell. Veselago wondered what would happen if two of the constants in Maxwell’s equations were flipped from positive to negative. The dance of the electronsThings are visible because of the way that their atoms interact with a beam of light. When the beam, an electromagnetic wave, hits an atom on this page the electrons in the lowest energy state of the atom absorb the wave’s energy and rise to higher energy levels. Only light of exactly the right colour, the one that corresponds to the energy difference between the two levels, will be absorbed ? all other colours pass through
They put down single layers of atoms, one at a time, to create specially patterned crystal wafers only a few billionths of a metre deep. These two-dimensional sandwiches, dubbed nanostructures, behave like “artificial atoms”: within them, electrons rattle around in energy levels that are customised to respond in a predictable way to laser light.
In this way, we could exploit an effect predicted by quantum mechanics, the baffling theory that rules the atomic domain: an electron can be prevented from absorbing a particle of laser light and jumping to a higher energy level if a second laser beam is used to link or “couple” the two energy levels to a third one.
We could be made with a negative refractive index ? a measure of the ability to warp light ? so that light entering them bends in the opposite direction to light passing through normal materials. This discovery has many practical uses; for example, light beams can be focused as small as the features on microchips, making electronics faster and smarter.
Though a year has passed since the discovery of a new family of high-temperature superconductors, a viable explanation for the iron-based materials’ unusual talent remains elusive. But a team of scientists working at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) may be close to the answer.
The team has found strong evidence that magnetism is a pivotal factor governing the physical properties of iron pnictides, a group of materials that conduct electricity without resistance at temperatures of up to 56 kelvin (-217 degrees celsius). Iron pnictides are composed of regularly spaced layers of iron sandwiched between other substances. And although -217 might sound pretty cold, they are the first class of materials found to superconduct at that high a temperature since the discovery of copper-based superconductors more than two decades ago.
The team’s evidence shows that without taking magnetism into account, theoretical calculations of iron pnictides’ inner structure do not line up with actual lab measurements. Factor in magnetism, though, and these discrepancies vanish—a decisive difference that, according to theorist Taner Yildirim, could imply that magnetism is also key to iron pnictide superconductivity.
“Without considering magnetism, for example, the calculated distance between iron layers—a distance that has been thoroughly measured—comes out to be wrong,” says Yildirim, of NIST’s Center for Neutron Research. “However, provided that we consider magnetic spin in our calculations, we can explain almost all of the iron pnictides’ structural and dynamic properties.”
Yildirim gave an invited talk* at the March meeting of the American Physical Society, where he presented theoretical evidence demonstrating how magnetism controls basic aspects of iron pnictides as the position of the atoms, the materials’ phase transition i.e. the sudden changes in the structure with temperature, and—probably, Yildirim says—their superconducting properties.
“Determining the mechanism of superconductivity in iron pnictide systems is very important in solving the long-standing mystery of the high temperature superconductor phenomena in general,” Yildirim said. “Once we have such an understanding of this strange phenomenon, we can then make predictions and design new materials with even higher superconductivity temperatures.”
Hall Effect Thrusters rely on the acceleration of Xenon or Bismuth ions down a cylindrical anode to a cathode composed of a plasma. The electrical charge due to the Xenon or Bismuth ions is neutralized as these ions pass into the cathode with the result that the net cancellation of the electrical charge coupled with the kinetic energy of the accelerated reaction mass produces a net massive particle stream away from the rocket thereby resulting in a net momentum gain and thus a net velocity gain by the space craft.
Hall Effect Thrusters have a member that produces a radial magnetic field that is set up between the member and the surrounding acceleration tube. Due to the relatively large mass of the ions, the ions are effected only slightly by the magnetic field. The electrons produced near the end of the element are far more effected by the magnetic field and are thus held in place thus resulting in the creation of the cathode. The Hall Effect current is caused by a portion of the electrons spiraling down towards the anode wherein these electrons collide with the Xenon or Bismuth -rubidium gas mixture in order to produce propulsion momentum in the ions.
A pair of laser beams (red arrows) impinges upon an ultracold gas cloud of rubidum atoms (green oval) to create synthetic magnetic fields (labeled Beff). (Inset) The beams, combined with an external magnetic field (not shown) cause the atoms to "feel" a rotational force; the swirling atoms create vortices in the microchips do the 4d manipulation of microchips.
Now the xenon-rubidium-bismuth combinations by hall’s quantization will have effective modulations in differentiating the magnetic field as evaluated by Sankara Velayudhan Nandakumar special officer on behalf of Loyola college nano technology dept Cape Institute of Technology,Nagercoil formerly with ,KNSK Engineering college ,Nagercoil as research scholar,Anna University with Hubble space research committee of Hon.Roger Davies,Hon.Collin Webbs FRS of Laser dn of Oxford uk,Hon.Marteen Rees ,Emeritus Professor of cosmology Cambridge ,former president of Royal society, London

I have had an interest in the importation business especially in the ICT sector. This would be my greatest opportunity ever to learn, master and exploit this idea.I believe it will take the efforts of the learned few to raise the level of ICT in Kenya as well as other third world countries. An MBA will unfold this long lived desire into a reality.

am a BED business and mathematics graduate from Kenyatta university Kenya.
