Financing for International Students

Canadian Universities recognize the challenges which International students face while studying in Canada. The Canadian Government and most of the Canadian Universities offer scholarships and student aids to ensure that highly qualified international students from around the world, especially from developing countries, are financially supported to complete their college degree programs.

What Type of Fees Do I pay – Domestic or International?

It is only the tuition cost which will be significantly higher for international students. Otherwise all other university expenses, such as accommodation, books and supplies, are paid on normal domestic students rates.

You will pay domestic fees if you meet one of the below criteria:

-You are a Canadian citizen, living in or outside of Canada
-You are a Permanent Resident of Canada

You will pay international fees if:

-You are a student in Canada studying on a study permit
-You are an international student studying on a study permit

There will be additional costs such as applying for your study permit, cost of flights, and updating your passport.

Are There Scholarships for International Students?

There are number of scholarships offered by Canadian Government, Private Organizations and Canadian Universities, which range from $1000 CAD to $40,000 CAD over one year.

Newly admitted undergraduate students can apply to University’s Entrance Scholarship Programs. Canadian Universities also offer in-course award programs for undergraduate students after enrolment into undergraduate and post-graduate degree program.

How scholarships are awarded?

-Most of the scholarships are awarded based on academic performance and do not require a separate application.

-Government and external scholarships are awarded merit and need based applications.

What else can I do to help pay for my education?

-CO-OP Programs: Enrol in a co-op program and gain paid work experience.  You can earn between $30,000- $75,000 CAD by the time you graduate.

-International Work Study Permit: Apply to the International Work Study Program — part-time on-campus jobs for full-time international students who need assistance covering their education-related costs.

-Part-Time Jobs: Take a part-time job on campus.  International students are eligible to apply to hundreds of part-time and full-time jobs on campus. No work permit is required.

-Work-Permit: Obtain a work permit and work off campus.  After studying at an Canadian university for 6 months, you’re eligible to work off campus with a student work permit for

(i) up to 20 hours/week (part-time) during the school year, and

(ii) up to 40 hours/week (full-time) during the summer break.

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships for International Students
Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best international postdoctoral applicants. 70 fellowships worth of $70,000 per year (taxable) will be awarded up to 2 years (nonrenewable). Applications for 2014/15 competition will close on September 24, 2014.

Mitacs-Accelerate PhD Fellowships for International Students
The Mitacs-Accelerate is offering PhD fellowships for Canadian and foreign students. The fellow will receive 3 years of funding and the opportunity to apply their specialized expertise to various research challenges. Applicant has not already received a previous Mitacs Accelerate award at the PhD level. The total grant for each PhD student is $90,000 over 3 years and the partner organization must contribute a minimum of $36,000 over 3 years. Applications will close on June 18, 2014.

Gordon F. Henderson Human Rights Canada Scholarships for International Students
Canada scholarships for international students are available to undertake master degree at University of Ottawa. The value of scholarship is $15,000 for a period of one year. The candidate must demonstrate a significant interest in human rights which will be evident from her or his personal, professional and/or academic experience. Application should be submitted till June 13, 2014.
