IELTS- Cracking through English Testing System

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) has been a pioneer in testing English Proficiency for studying abroad and for gaining non- academic training or work experience abroad since decades. Each year millions of students of non-English speaking countries take IELTS to test their English language skills in over 135 countries. This test is accepted in around 6000 institutions in Australia, Britain, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, United States and many other countries. Further IELTS is accepted by both public and private bodies like universities schools, colleges, Government department and agencies, Industrial bodies and multinational companies etc. For the multinational companies, IELTS is mandatory to seek employment.


IELTS is basically conducted by three reputed organizations which are British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and University of Cambridge ESOL and thus it assures high trust ability, security and standard of examination.

IELTS judges all the four parameter of language skills which are reading, writing, speaking, listening. IELTS Exam Format

IELTS is generally available in two formats: Academic and General Training Format. Academic section focuses on students who are willing to seek admission in under/post graduate courses or training or practice abroad. Certain professional courses also demand Academic test results. On the other hand, general training version targets those who plan to take non academic training or work experience abroad or secondary education. IELTS  Time Division

The two formats differ in writing and reading sections whereas other two sections i.e speaking and listening sections remain same in both formats. Listening section consists of 4 sections having 40 items in 30 Minutes.  IELTS Sample Listening Test and Speaking Test are also available online which will certainly help you in preparing for these tests  Reading section consists of 3 sections having 40 items in 60 minutes. Writing section consists of 2 tasks in 60 minutes. At last speaking section comprises 11 to 14 minutes.

IELTS  Score Bands

The IELTS scores on Nine Band Scoring system which is recognized through out the world. Each band signifies a specific competence in English. The minimum score band required for the selection in different institutions differs and depends on the institution itself.

Registration and Application

The registration for IELTS starts from registration of your desired test date. IELTS provide 48 test dates each year having their deadlines for registration. These test dates can be find on IELTS website. Then proceed with searching nearest test centre for the examination. The application form is available on the website which has to be filled and sent with test fees and passport size photograph. All the formalities in the registration for the test should be done with utmost care. You can find guidelines for registration here
A test report is generally posted to you. Further it can also be sent to five institutions of your choice automatically free of charge. Candidate receives only a copy of the report and for more copies; candidates have to pay the fees.

Apart from this IELTS’ scores are also accepted by some commonwealth countries like Australia, UK, New Zealand, and Canada for considering the prospective immigrants.
