TOEFL is a standardized test which is administered by Educational Testing Service (ETS) worldwide. This test measures the capability of non-native speakers of English to use and comprehend English as it is used in colleges and universities abroad.
Basic Format of Test
The TOEFL® test is offered in two formats: The TOEFL iBT( test administered via Internet), or The TOEFL PBT (administered in a paper-based format). The type of format you will appear for totally depends upon applicant’s geographic location:.
The TOEFL iBT test: Mostly candidates prefer to appear for the TOEFL iBT as it administered via Internet. It is held round about 30–40 times a year at more than 4,500 authorized test centers throughout the world. The TOEFL iB test cost between US$160 to US$250 and varies between countries. There are four sections in the TOEFL iBT® test: Reading Section (Score of: 0–30), Listening Section (Score of: 0–30) Speaking Section (Score of: 0–30) and Writing Section (Score of: 0–30).
The score remains valid for two years from the test date. There is no passing or failing scores. Each Institute or College set their own score requirement.
The TOEFL PBT: Centers where Internet is not accessible, TOEFL PBT is available. It is a paper based test and offered six times a year. TOEFL PBT test costs about US$160.There are three sections plus an essay writing portion in the TOEFL PBT: Listening Comprehension, Reading Comprehension, Structure and Written Expression and a TWE® essay part.
TOEFL PBT scores too remain valid for 2 years, and each institute set their own score requirement.
If you are from China, India, Japan, Korea and Taiwan then you can apply for the TOEFL® Scholarship Program. The TOEFL scholarship fund can only be used for covering your tuition fees and that too once you have registered with the institution and arrived on campus.
