Chinese Government Award Program for EU Students, 2021

Ministry of Education of P.R. China (MOE) is awarding scholarships to students of EU member countries in an academic session. This program supports undergraduate students, graduate students, general scholars, and senior scholars.

In order to promote mutual understanding, cooperation and exchanges in various fields between China and other countries, the Chinese government has set up a series of scholarship programs to sponsor international students, teachers, and scholars to study and conduct research in Chinese universities.

Applicants must be a citizen of an EU member country, and be in good health. They should meet the language requirements of higher education institutions. General English language requirements for English-instructed programs and Chinese-instructed programs are different.

The China Scholarship Council (CSC) is a non-profit institution with legal person status affiliated with the Ministry of Education. The objective of the CSC is to provide, in accordance with the law, statutes, and relevant principles and policies of China, financial assistance to the Chinese citizens wishing to study abroad and to the foreign citizens wishing to study in China.

Brief Description

  • Course Level: This program supports undergraduate programs, master’s programs, doctoral programs, general scholar programs, and senior scholar programs.
  • Study Subject(s): Scholarship is provided for courses offered by the Chinese HEIs.
  • Awards: The EU Program provides a full scholarship of tuition waiver, accommodation, stipend, and comprehensive medical insurance. Please refer to Introduction to CGS-Coverage and Standard for details of each item.
  • Nationality: Students of EU member countries (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and United Kingdom) can apply for this Chinese Government scholarship.

Eligibility

To be eligible, applicants must: Applicants must be a citizen of an EU member country and be in good health.

The requirements for applicants’ degree and age are that applicants must:

  • be a high school graduate under the age of 25 when applying for the undergraduate programs;
  • be a bachelor’s degree holder under the age of35 when applying for the master’s programs;
  • be a master’s degree holder under the age of 40 when applying for the doctoral programs;
  • be under the age of 45 and have a high school diploma (or higher) when applying for the general scholar programs;
  • be a master’s degree holder or an associate professor (or above) under the age of 50 when applying for the senior scholar programs.

How to Apply

  • Step 1 – Apply to the EU office for the CGS opportunity.
  • Step 2 – Apply to the target university for the Pre-admission Letter once recommended by the dispatching authorities as an eligible candidate (applicants will receive an Award Letter for CGS Candidate).
  • Step 3 – Complete the online application procedure at CSC Online Application System for International Students, submit online the completed Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship and print a hard copy. Please consult the EU office for Instructions of CSC Online Application System for International Students and Agency Number.
  • Step 4 – Submit all application documents to the EU office before the deadline.

Supporting Documents:  Applicants must submit all the following supporting documents:

  • Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship written in Chinese or English
  • Notarized highest diploma; Prospective diploma recipients must submit an official document issued by applicant’s current school to prove their current student status or expected graduation date. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations
  • Academic transcripts (written in Chinese or English); Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations
  • A Study Plan or Research Proposal (written in Chinese or English); This should be a minimum of 200 words for undergraduate students, 500 words for non-degree students, and 800 words for graduate students
  • Two Recommendation Letters (written in Chinese or English); Applicants for the graduate programs or the senior scholar programs must submit two recommendation letters signed by a professor or an associate professor
  • A CD of their own works (only required for arts students); Applicants for music studies are requested to submit a CD of their own musical works. Applicants for the fine arts programs must submit a CD of their own works which include two sketches, two colour paintings and two other works
  • Valid documents of legal guardians in China (only required for applicants under the age of 18
  • Foreigner Physical Examination Form (photocopy), (written in English, only required for applicants planning to stay in China for more than 6 months, can be downloaded from.
  • Entrance Requirement: Chinese Government Scholarship supports international students, teachers and scholars to pursue degrees at all levels (bachelor’s, master’s and PhD) or non-degree studies and to conduct research in China.
  • English Language Requirements: General Chinese Language requirements for application to Chinese-instructed program
    -Old HSK6 (or new HSK5)or above is required for the application of liberal arts, economics and management majored students.
    -Old HSK3 (or new HSK4) or above is required for the application of science, engineering and medical science majored students.

    General English language requirements for application to English-instructed programs:
    -Free English Language testing for students from English-speaking countries.
    -Free English Language testing for students from countries in which English is the major teaching language on condition that the relevant proof documents were provided.
    -TOEFL 550, IELTS 5.5 or Pass university’s entrance examination.

Application Deadline: You need to apply between early January and early April. Consult the Office for Education and Culture, Mission of P. R. China to the European Union (referred to as the EU office) for the specific deadline of each year.
