Scholarship Description: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and spectroscopy (MRS) are key tools for non-invasive imaging of biological systems and medical diagnostics. MRS in particular is a promising tool for the quantification of chemical biomarkers in vivo, which could aid the early detection of many serious diseases from dementia to cancers. The main aim of the project will be to develop new tools and pulse sequences for MRS to overcome these limitations. This will involve the application of quantum-dynamic modelling and quantum control techniques to design chemically selective excitation pulses, as well as their experimental implementation and evaluation.
