The Japan Foundation, New York (JFNY) invites applications for its ongoing JFNY Grant for Japanese Studies, designed to support academic projects that promote a deeper understanding of Japan. U.S.-based institutions with 501(c)(3) status are encouraged to apply for funding to host conferences, symposia, lectures, and other scholarly events—either in-person or virtually.
Applicants must be U.S.-based institutions or organizations with 501(c)(3) status. Projects must aim to promote Japanese Studies and cannot include language education, scientific or commercial activities, or trips to Japan. Individuals and for-profit entities are not eligible.

Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Must be a U.S.-based institution or organization with 501(c)(3) status.

The project must aim to promote Japanese Studies.

Organizations must not have received this grant for three consecutive years ending in FY 2022-2023.

The project must not have already received funding from other Japan Foundation grants in the same fiscal year.

The proposal must not include ineligible themes such as language education, martial arts, medical or scientific topics, or religious/political/commercial activities.

Study tours and research trips to Japan are also excluded.

Interested applicants must submit the following documents:

Note: Priority is given to projects that have secured supplementary funding from sources other than the Japan Foundation.
