Joint Industrial and EPSRC-funded PhD Studentship in Synthesis and Processing of Novel Biomaterials, UK

The University of Nottingham is inviting applications for a fully funded EPSRC and industry-supported PhD studentship in the synthesis and processing of novel biomaterials. The project focuses on developing biofilm-resistant polymers for health and consumer care products, contributing to the fight against antimicrobial resistance. Candidates should hold a 2:1 degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.

Applicants should hold or expect to achieve at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. A master’s degree or substantial research experience is advantageous. Experience in organic or polymer synthesis and material analysis is beneficial. EU applicants with three years of UK residency before October 2025 may qualify for full funding. This PhD project aims to develop and synthesize novel biomaterials and polymers that resist biofilm formation, advancing health and consumer care products such as oral and skin care formulations.

Eligibility

  • Eligible Countries: Open to applicants from the UK, EU, and international countries.
  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The scholarship will be awarded for PhD research in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related disciplines.
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Hold or expect to achieve at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or international equivalent) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.

  • Possess an MChem/MSci (4-year integrated Master’s), BSc + MSc, or BSc with significant research experience (preferred).

  • Experience in organic/polymer synthesis and/or material analysis is advantageous.

  • EU applicants who have been UK residents for at least three years before October 2025 may be eligible for full funding.

  • English Language Requirement: IELTS 6.0 overall (minimum 5.5 in each element) or equivalent proof of proficiency.
