Open Notebook Early-Career Fellowship Program

Applications are now open for the Open Notebook’s Early-Career Fellowship Program! This prestigious opportunity provides emerging science journalists with a paid, part-time fellowship to develop their writing skills and produce articles for publication.

Applicants must be early-career science journalists with less than three years of regular professional experience in science writing. Some prior experience in writing for the general public is required, though extensive training is not necessary.

Eligibility

  • Acceptable Course or Subjects: The fellowship is for early-career science journalists focusing on writing articles for The Open Notebook
  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
    • Must be an early-career science journalist with fewer than three years of regular professional science writing experience.
    • Some experience in writing for the general public is required.
    • Internships and student work do not count toward the three-year experience limit.
    • Exceptions can be made for applicants with over three years of experience if that experience is not in English.
    • Applications must include writing samples and recommendation letters in English. Translated materials are acceptable.

How to Apply

To apply, applicants must submit:
• Responses to questions about their interest in the fellowship
• Short proposals for two feature stories
• A resume or CV
• One letter of reference
• Up to two writing or multimedia samples (aimed at the general public)
All application materials must be submitted by October 31, 2024.
