PhD Candidates Positions in Industrial Ecology, Netherlands

Leiden University’s Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML) invites applications for two PhD positions in Industrial Ecology as part of the Groeien met Groen Staal (GGS) programme, aiming to decarbonize the Dutch steel sector by 2050. The positions focus on Prospective Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Dynamic Material Flow Analysis (MFA).

To be eligible, applicants must hold a master’s degree in industrial ecology, environmental sciences, process engineering, or a related field. They should have knowledge or strong motivation to develop expertise in Life Cycle Assessment (for the LCA PhD) or Material Flow Analysis (for the MFA PhD), as well as an interest in steelmaking and alloy behavior.

    • Hold a Master’s degree in Industrial Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Process Engineering, or a related field.

    • Show documented expertise in LCA (for the LCA PhD) or MFA (for the MFA PhD), or motivation to develop this knowledge early in the PhD.

    • Have knowledge of steelmaking (both positions) and alloy behavior (for MFA PhD), or willingness to acquire this expertise.

    • Possess programming skills (Python or similar) and ability to work with large datasets, or motivation to learn them.

    • Demonstrate excellent English language skills, analytical ability, self-motivation, and strong communication skills.
