  • Admissible Criteria: To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
  • Seeking to reach a professional standard of academic research and to pursue a career in either Higher Education or professional theatre, film, television, or interactive media.
  • Working professionally in theatre, film, television, or interactive media who wish to make a career move into teaching and research in Higher Education.
  • Working in theatre, film, television, or interactive media who wish to develop their careers with the production of a substantial piece of original research.

How to Apply

  • How to Apply: In order to apply for the scholarship, please submit an application for a PhD degree programme by the given deadline.
  • Supporting Documents: You will need to submit a proposal setting out: the research question(s) that the PhD will address, a clear indication of the methodologies to be adopted, a summary of the relevant scholarly field or context that the project will engage with and contribute to, and a provisional bibliography (see preparing a PhD Proposal). You will also normally be required to provide a writing sample.
  • Admission Requirements: You will normally have completed a Master’s degree in a relevant subject and have gained at least a merit pass or equivalent. Relevant professional experience in theatre, film, television, or interactive media production may also be taken into consideration.
  • Language Requirement: If English is not your first language then you must submit a copy of a recent English language test certificate or provide details of when you are going to take the test.

Benefits

The studentship will cover the tuition fee at the home/EU rate (£4,407 in 2020/21) and a stipend at the standard research council rate for a period of up to 3 years (£15,285 in 2020/21). International (non-EU) candidates are welcome to apply but will be required to pay the difference between the UK/EU and international tuition fee rates, approx. £17,000 per year for the programme duration.
