Africa: Scholarships for African Students in Oxford University, United Kingdom
Scholarships for African Country Students in Oxford University UK: ORISHA Graduate Studentships (MPhil and DPhil students)
ORISHA scholarships are also available to graduate (MPhil and DPhil) students in the following disciplines: Social and Cultural Anthropology, Archaeology, Development Studies, History, Human Geography, Literature, Politics and International Relations, Religious Studies. The award is available for students studying for two year masters degrees as well as for three-year doctoral degrees. Research proposals must include a major focus on Africa.
The scholarship is variable in the amount awarded. Generally, it will cover college and university fees at the home rate only along with a maintenance allowance. However, the award may cover full overseas fees where sufficient funds are available. Students from African countries are strongly encouraged to apply. Renewal for two and three year periods is subject to satisfactory progress. Overseas students are encouraged to apply for supplementary funds from other sources both in their home countries and in Oxford. (For further details of other awards, see the University web site.)
Applicants for the Graduate Scholarship may be new candidates for admission to the University, or those already registered as graduate students at the University of Oxford. The University of Oxford academic admissions procedure is separate from that for this scholarship. For further details see the University web site, or email to graduate.admissions@admin.ox.ac.uk. Those applying to the University for the first time should ensure that their application for entry is made well before the deadline for this scholarship as the scholarship can only be awarded to a student who has been accepted for study at the University.
If not already a member of an Oxford college, candidates for admission in 2009 should name St Cross College as their college of first choice on their University and scholarship application form. St Antony’s should be named as the college of second choice.
There is no application form for the ORISHA Graduate Studentship. Applicants should send a covering letter, explaining their need for the award and giving details of any other financial support they already have or have applied for, along with a full CV and a short description of their proposed research (no more than 4 pages). These documents should reach the African Studies Administrator, 92 Woodstock Road, Oxford OX2 7ND, by 13th March 2009.
Please note that short listed candidates for the Graduate Studentships will be asked to submit written work of approximately 5,000 words.
