Alfa Fellowship Program for US, UK and German Applicants, 2016-2017

Applications are invited for Alfa Fellowship Program for the 2016-2017 program year. The Alfa Fellowship Program is a distinguished professional development program placing accomplished young professionals in work assignments at leading organizations in Russia. The program includes four-month Russian language tutoring program in the US,UK and Germany, four-month Russian language course in Moscow, Orientation seminar in Washington, D.C and extended professional experience. Fellows receive a monthly stipend, language training, program-related travel costs, housing and insurance. The application deadline is December 1, 2015.

Eligibility: Candidates for the Alfa Fellowship Program must meet the following eligibility requirements:
-U.S. U.K. or German citizen
-25–35 years old at the time of application deadline
-Russian proficiency is preferred; qualified candidates with fluency in another second language may be considered
-Graduate degree or equivalent training in business, economics, journalism, law, public policy, or a related field
-At least two years of relevant work experience; candidates without a graduate degree must demonstrate extensive and equivalent professional experience in their field, approximately six years, in order to qualify for the Alfa Fellowship Program.

Scholarship Description: The Alfa Fellowship Program is a distinguished professional development program placing accomplished young professionals in work assignments at leading organizations in the fields of business, economics, journalism, law, public policy and related areas in Russia. The program accepts up to 18 American, British and German citizens per year. The program includes intensive Russian language training, seminar series, and extended professional experience. Fellows receive a monthly stipend, language training, coverage of all program-related travel costs, housing and insurance. The Alfa Fellowship Program aims to expand networks of American, British, German, and Russian professionals, develop greater intercultural understanding, and advance knowledge of Russia in the West.

Number of award(s): The program accepts up to 18 American, British and German citizens per year.

Duration of award(s): The program will run from March through mid-June 2016.

What does it cover? Fellows receive a monthly stipend, language training, coverage of all program-related travel costs, housing and insurance. In addition to individualized professional assignments, the Alfa Fellowship Program includes:
-Four-month Russian language tutoring program in the U.S., U.K. or Germany
-Four-month Russian language course in Moscow
-Orientation seminar in Washington, D.C., with accommodation and roundtrip travel
-Housing in Moscow for the duration of the program
-Moscow seminar program
-Generous monthly stipend
-Three regional excursions throughout Russia and one to a neighboring country
-Limited international health, accident, and liability insurance

Selection Criteria: The Alfa Fellowship Program is very competitive, similar to being accepted at a top university. The Selection Committee will consider candidates’ full profiles. Unique experiences, specific goals and interests related to Russia, and enthusiasm for new and exciting opportunities are as important as good grades, extensive professional experience and Russian language fluency. Candidates should, in their application, try to convince the Selection Committee why they should be on the Alfa Fellowship Program, how they expect it to benefit their career growth, and what they have to offer through their participation, both during and after the program.

Notification: A pre-selection is conducted following the December 1 application deadline. Selection interviews for American candidates are scheduled to take place in New York City in late-January. Selection interviews for German candidates will take place in mid-February in Berlin. Selection interviews for British candidates will take place in late February in London. Round-trip transportation and accommodation will be provided on an as-needed basis.
