In partnership with the German Academic Exchange Service and African University Partners, the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology is offering the ARPPIS-DAAD PhD Scholarships for sub-Saharan African students.

The primary objective of the ARPPIS PhD Programme is to prepare young researchers from Africa who want to pursue a PhD degree in Kenya.

Icipe is an international scientific research institute, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya that works towards improving lives and livelihoods of people in Africa. DAAD is the German national agency for the support of international academic cooperation and offers programmes and funding for students, faculty, researchers, and others in higher education.

Scholarship Description:

  • Application Deadline: 31st January 2020
  • Course Level: Scholarships are available for pursuing a Ph.D. programme.
  • Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded for training in insect sciences for development.
  • Scholarship Award: The applicants will receive:
  • Six ARPPIS-DAAD PhD scholarships are available to nationals of sub-Saharan countries.
  • The scholarships cover all costs of the Ph.D. programme, including travel, living expenses, medical insurance, university fees and all research and training costs. Financial support for the scholarships is from DAAD and icipe.
  • Successful candidates will carry out their research in selected projects at icipe.
  • Number of Scholarships:  Six ARPPIS-DAAD Ph.D. scholarships are available
  • Nationality: Scholarships are available to nationals of sub-Saharan countries
  • Scholarship can be taken in Kenya

Eligibility for the Scholarship:

  • Eligible Countries: Citizens of sub-Saharan countries can apply for these scholarships.
  • Entrance Requirements:
    • A citizen of a country in sub-Saharan Africa.
    • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum pass of second-class, upper-division.
    • Master’s degree, with above-average results, taken with both coursework and research in the field of natural sciences or another field relevant to the PhD project (see LIST OF PROJECTS).
    • Master’s degree must have been completed less than six years ago at the time of application.
    • Additional specific skills requirements may be required depending on the PhD project(s) selected by the candidate. For information on applicant requirements for each project see LIST OF PROJECTS.
    • Good working knowledge of English (written & spoken).
    • Clearly show motivation and strong commitment.
    • Completed application form and accompanying supporting documents.
    • Qualified female candidates and candidates from less privileged regions or groups as well as candidates with disabilities are especially encouraged to apply.
    • Qualified nationals of French- and Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa are also encouraged to apply
  • English Language Requirements: Applicants from outside the home country will often need to meet specific English language/other language requirements in order to be able to study there.

Application Procedure:

Three-Year Doctoral Training in Insect and Related Sciences for Development

  3. Submitting your application and supporting documents
    1. Please submit your application form and supporting documents (see below) by uploading to the online application platform HERE.
    2. Once you have entered and uploaded everything, click the Continue button. This will take you to the Review your Entries page where you can review and change anything in your application. When you are satisfied with your application, click the Continue button to submit your application. This cannot be undone, so please make sure all your application information is correct before submitting. We will send an email acknowledgement when we receive your completed online application.
    3. You will receive an email acknowledgement once we receive your completed online application.
    4. Do not submit your application by email. Only applications and supporting documents (below) submitted online will be accepted. Applications submitted by email will be rejected.
    5. Additionally, once you submit your application to icipe, please send a brief email notification to DAAD that you have applied to icipe with the subject “Your Surname_First name_ICIPE” to [email protected]

  • Supporting Documents: Signed curriculum vitae. Certified copies of all university degree certificates, Certified copies of all university transcripts, Letter of motivation, Two recommendation letters by university teachers, Close-up photograph in colour of your full head and upper shoulders, Copy of National ID, Copy of Passport biodata page (the page that has your picture and personal details), and If currently employed, a signed, official recommendation letter from your employer. If the employer is granting study leave for a full-time PhD program, then this should also be stated in the letter. The letter must be on official letterhead.

  • Six ARPPIS-DAAD PhD scholarships are available to nationals of sub-Saharan countries for the following projects: LIST OF PROJECTS
  • The scholarships cover all costs of the PhD programme, including travel, living expenses, medical insurance, university fees and all research and training costs.
  • Successful candidates will register with an ARPPIS partner university in Africa after starting the PhD programme at icipe.
  • The PhD programme will commence in September 2020.
