The Baltic-American Freedom Foundation is seeking applicants for its Research Scholarship to conduct independent or collaborative research projects in the US for up to 12 months. These scholarships are available for applicants from Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania and who hold a PhD degree.

The aim of the fellowships is to promote mutual enrichment, further strengthening ties between the nations and providing invaluable career and personal development opportunities for participants to leverage in their leadership roles upon return to their home countries and institutions.

The Baltic-American Freedom Foundation is a non-profit foundation focused on research and business. Endowed by proceeds from the Baltic-American Enterprise Fund, a U.S. Government-initiated investment fund, the foundation seeks to strengthen ties between the people of the United States and the peoples of the Baltic States.

Scholarship Description:

Eligibility for the Scholarship:

  • Eligible Countries:  Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania
  • Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet following criteria:
  1. Senior academic and research professionals are encouraged to apply. Candidates should hold a PhD degree or have significant relevant professional experience. Applicants must design and develop their own projects and create budgets for their implementation
  2. Hold a passport from Estonia, Latvia, or Lithuania
  3. Not have immediate family members that are BAFF employees, BAFF Advisory Board, or Board of Directors members
  4. Agree to return to your home country for a minimum of two years immediately post-scholarship
  • English Language Requirements: Applicants must have sufficient knowledge of the language of instruction of the host university.

  • The letter should state the length of the hosting period and the resources available to you (e.g., office/lab space, equipment and supplies, library access, etc.)
  • Two Letters of Recommendation: (PDF)
  • At least one of the letters should be from your home institution.
  • The project proposal will be evaluated in terms of
  • Validity as a scholarly undertaking,
  • Feasibility (Can the project be completed in one year? Is the candidate’s formal training adequate for the project?)
  • Potential impact and benefit for the home institution or country upon completion
  • Statement of proposed study or research: (PDF)
  • In no more than 1,000 words describe your research plans and reasons for wishing to undertake them. Be as specific and well defined as possible, and include:
  • Project title
  • Summary/abstract of project goals and objectives
  • Detailed description of project
  • Dates and duration of project
  • Specific information about resources available only at the host institution (e.g., special collections,  equipment, research facilities, outstanding research teams in the field, etc.)
  • Likely impact and benefits on home institution or home country upon completion
