Applications are invited for International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) Scholarship Competition for the year 2018.

The International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS) is a 24 month Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) developed by a consortium of four European universities – Charles University in Prague (Czech Republic), Dublin City University (Ireland), University of Glasgow (UK), and the OTH Regensburg (Germany).

The University of Glasgow is the fourth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Scotland’s four ancient universities.

Course Level: Scholarship is available to pursue Master degree programme.

Study Subject: Scholarship is awarded to pursue International Master in Security, Intelligence and Strategic Studies (IMSISS). Students on this degree programme will examine a broad range of contemporary security challenges, such as terrorism, civil war and conflict, mass migration, energy supply security, cyber security and new technologies, and transnational and serious organised crime. Students will also explore the intelligence and strategic approaches used by governmental and non-governmental actors to combat these threats.

Scholarship Award: The IMSISS student scholarship includes:

  • A contribution to the student participation costs (including tuition fees, full insurance coverage and any other mandatory costs related to the students’ participation in the EMJMD study programme
  • A contribution to student travel and installation costs
  • Aa monthly subsistence allowance for the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme
Contribution to the participation costs up to 4,500 € per year per scholarship holder from a Programme Country

up to 9,000 € per year per scholarship holder from a Partner Country

Any amount in excess of these maximum contributions must be covered by the participating organizations and cannot be charged to the scholarship holder

Contribution to the travel and installation costs 1,000 € per year per scholarship holder resident of a Programme country

2,000 € per year for travel costs + 1,000 € for installation costs for a scholarship holder resident in a Partner country whose location is situated at less than 4,000 km from the EMJMD coordinating HEI

3,000 € per year for travel costs + 1,000 € for installation costs for a scholarship resident in a Partner country whose location is situated at 4.000km or more from the EMJMD coordinating HEI.

Distance is calculated by the Partners using the EACEA calculator.

Contribution to subsistence costs 1,000 € per month for the entire duration of the EMJMD study programme (24 months maximum).

Contribution to subsistence costs will not be given to scholarship holders for the periods of the EMJMD (study/research/placement/thesis preparation) spent in their country of residence

Contribution to subsistence costs will not be given to Partner Country scholarship holders for periods exceeding 3 months spent in any Partner Country.

Scholarship can be taken in the UK

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship:

  • You should have a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject, such as, but not limited to politics, international relations, history, area and cultural studies, law, sociology, criminology, human geography, computing science, language sciences, global studies, psychology, media studies and journalism, modern languages or business. Other disciplines not listed here will be considered on an individual basis.  Applicants with a relevant work experience background in the fields of policing, security, intelligence and risk analysis will also be considered. You can check your country- specific requirements on our country information pages.

  • International students with academic qualifications below those required should contact our partner institution, Glasgow International College, who offer a range of pre-Masters courses.

Academic Background: The programme is opened to students from various backgrounds.

English Language Requirements:

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic module (not General Training)

  • Overall score 6.5
  • No sub-test less than 6.0
  • Or equivalent scores in another recognized qualification (see below)

Common equivalent English language qualifications

All stated English tests are acceptable for admission to both home/EU and international students for this programme:

  • IbTOEFL: 90 overall; no sub-test less than Reading: 20 ; Listening: 19; Speaking: 19; Writing: 23
  • CAE (Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English): 176 overall; no sub-test less than 169
  • CPE (Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English):  176 overall; no sub-test less than 169
  • PTE Academic (Person Test of English, Academic test): 60 overall; no sub-test less than 59
  • Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English: ISEII at Distinction with Distinction in all sub-tests

For international students, the Home Office has confirmed that the University can choose to use these tests to make its own assessment of English language ability for visa applications to degree level programmes. The University is also able to accept an IELTS test (Academic module) from any of the 1000 IELTS test centres from around the world and we do not require a specific UKVI IELTS test for degree level programmes. We therefore still accept any of the English tests listed for admission to this programme.

Nationality: IMSISS student scholarships can be offered to students from any region of the world – however, no more than 3 from the same country or with the same nationality will be awarded in the same intake.
