The United States Department of Energy (DOE) is inviting applicants for the Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program across the US. This is a 10 weeks summer program for graduate students, postmasters, undergraduates, and post-associates.

The mission of the MLEF program is to strengthen a diverse pipeline of future STEM professionals. This program has mentored nearly 1000 of the best and brightest students from across the nation for future careers in the STEM workforce. All eligible candidates are encouraged to apply.

The Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program provides college students with an opportunity to gain and develop research skills with the Department of Energy’s Office of Fossil Energy for 10 weeks over the summer.

The mission of the MLEF program is to strengthen a diverse pipeline of future STEM professionals. This program has mentored several hundred of the best and brightest students nationwide for future STEM careers.

Application Deadline: Applications are open for the academic year 2023/2024. The application deadline is January 23, 2023.

Brief Description

  • Course Level: This is a 10 weeks summer program for Graduate Students, Post-Master’s, Undergraduates, and Post-associates.
  • Study Subject: Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (MLEF) Program has provided students with fellowship opportunities to gain hands-on research experience with the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Fossil Energy.
  • Number of Scholarships: 1000
  • Nationality: US citizens
  • Scholarship can be taken in the USA

Eligibility

  • Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application.
  • Be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.8.
  • Be currently enrolled full-time as a degree-seeking student in a STEM program at an accredited college or university at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD level (Students pursuing an Associate’s degree are eligible to apply if transferring to pursue a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Must be at least a college sophomore at the time of application.
  • Be available to participate in the full 10-week program.

 

Application Procedure:

How to Apply: 

  • The MLEF application process is a three-part process. To start the application process, go to the online application.
  • Current resume
  • Short-answer responses to essay questions
  • Unofficial transcripts: Unofficial transcripts must include the name of the academic institution, name of the student, completed/in-progress coursework and grades. First-year graduate students must submit their undergraduate transcript, including the last two years of courses, degree, and date degree was awarded. Documents must have all social security numbers, student identification numbers, and/or dates of birth removed (blanked out, blackened out, made illegibly, etc.) prior to uploading into the application system.
  • Providing contact information for two individuals who can serve as references. The first reference should be from an academic source and the second reference can be either from an academic or professional source.
  • The final step of the application process requires your two designated references to complete an online questionnaire. Refer to the section below for more details on this step.

Benefits

The MLEF Program provides stipends to Participants based on the following scale:

  • Current undergraduate students receive a weekly stipend of $650
  • Current Master’s students receive a weekly stipend of $750
  • Current PhD students receive a weekly stipend of $850
