PhD Position in Electric Power System: Sweden
PhD position in Electric Power Systems 2
KTH School of Electrical Engineering seeks a PhD candidate in Electric Power Systems
Project title: PMU-signal-based control of Power System Stabilizers (PSSs)
KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. There are circa 12,000 full-year undergraduate students, 1,400 postgraduate students and 3,100 employees.
The School of Electrical Engineering conducts research and education on the highest international level in Electric Power Engineering, Fusion and Space Plasma Physics, Telecommunications, and Networks, Information and Control Systems (NICS).
The scientific and technical activities of the Division of Electric Power Systems cover development and application of methods for analysis, simulation, and control of electric and integrated energy systems. The research activities in this division are divided into three subject areas, namely, power system dynamics and control, electricity markets and production planning, and power system network planning.
Background
Occurrence of low frequency inter-area modes is very frequent in interconnected power systems. The stability of these modes is necessary for secure system operation, and the behaviors of these modes are one of the crucial factors on setting the maximum allowable power transfer within the transmission systems. To damp these modes, Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) are the most common control means. However, today’s PSSs normally rely on local input information, and the effectiveness in damping inter-area modes may be limited since inter-area modes are not highly controllable and observable in the local signals. The main objective of this project is to tune some of the PSSs installed in the system based on remote information provided by PMUs, and to analyze the impact of these PSSs on damping of inter-area oscillations. It is expected that based on PMU signals a global observability can be achieved which may lead to an effective damping of inter-area oscillations by means of PMU-signal-based control of PSSs.
Qualifications
Applicants should have a completed academic degree on master’s level in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Physics, and also a good command of English.
To address its varied work, KTH aims to employ a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially as concerns its gender structure.
Employment
Form of employment: Time limited.
Start date: According to agreement.
The salary follows the directions provided by KTH, and the position will include 80% research and 20% teaching assistance.
