PhD scholarship in Green Chemistry

Description : A Scholarship to undertake a PhD in Chemistry (funded by the Italian Ministero dell’Università) is available as Cotutelle between the Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Italy) and the University of Sydney (Australia). A joint PhD degree will be awarded, based upon submission of an English-language thesis and laboratory work at both Universities. Applications from students of any nationality with a Honours, Masters or Laurea Specialistica degree in Chemistry and demonstrated research experience in synthetic chemistry are encouraged. The three year Scholarship (total of 47,734 €) commences on Jan 1st, 2010. Deadline for applications is expected mid July 2009 (exact date will be notified as soon as available). PhD Project Summary The topic relates to Green Chemistry, i.e. the implementation of new chemical processes with reduced environmental impact. It will involve the transformation of biomass (wood and sea algae) into target value-added chemicals. The PhD candidate will identify and characterize suitable biomass feedstocks (USyd+UniVe), develop new physico-chemical technologies to separate biomass into its component sugars (USyd), and study new chemical processes to transform these into products of interest for the fine chemical industry (UniVe).
