PhD Scholarship,Influence of Metal Captions on Hydroxyapatite (HAP) Dissolution Chemistry, The London School of Medicine & Dentistry,UK

Job Description: A graduate with an interest in biological physics/chemistry, biomedical physics/chemistry, or biomaterials science, with at least an upper second class honours degree is required for this project. It will be supervised jointly by the Dental Physical Sciences Unit at the Centre for Oral Growth and Development, Institute of Dentistry, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) located at the Mile End Campus, London, and the Dept of Mineralogy, Natural History Museum. The work is to be carried out in collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline, who are funding this project.

This studentship is due to commence in October 2010.

The aim is to study the important surface physical chemical factors influencing HAP, as a proxy for enamel, dissolution, and then to understand the influence of bio-organic chemicals on these. The objectives are to measure the rate of HAP dissolution under strictly controlled thermodynamic conditions relevant to dental diseases, using atomic force and novel X-ray microscopies and chemical titrations.

The student will be provided with a tailor-made training programme and will study in a unique and exciting environment of interdisciplinary research both at QMUL and at the Natural History Museum. The QMUL laboratory is located in the Dental Physical Sciences Unit which comprises a highly successful interdisciplinary team of basic scientists with international recognition for their work in biomaterials and biophysics research in relation to medicine and dentistry, and biophysical techniques development. Here, the graduate will have access to a wide variety of cutting-edge technologies and core facilities, including the multi-million pound state-of-the-art NanoVision Centre, as well as interaction with researchers across a wide range of biomedical research. The NHM laboratories are based at the Cromwell Road site, and house excellent atomic force and electron microscope facilities and wet chemistry labs; NHM is a European Infrastructure facility for Nanomaterial Safety testing. At NHM the student will be part of an interdisciplinary research group studying different aspects of (nano)mineral reactivity. In addition, the student will have the opportunity of a short industrial placement at the Weybridge Research Laboratories of GSK.

In the recent Research Assessment Exercise the QMUL Dental Institute was ranked joint first for research quality in the UK.
