PhD scholarship in Sustainable Facilities Management (SFM)

Applicants are invited for a 3-year PhD scholarship at the Technical University of Denmark, Department of Management Engineering for appointment 1September 2008.

The scholarship is placed at the Centre for Facilities Management – Realdania Research under the Department of Management Engineering. It is a new research centre which purpose is to develop new knowledge about facilities management and to build research capacity within this management area. Description of the project
The aim of the PhD is to develop a theoretical frame for understanding SFM and to identify which and how actors, conditions and drivers influence the development of facilities management from a sustainability perspective.

The main topic of the PhD is set by the following questions:

  • How is SFM understood in Denmark and abroad?
  • How does SFM open for use of new technologies, processes and strategies?

The project methodology is mainly qualitative and combines empirical studies with theoretical perspectives. The methodology is developed as part of the project and will depend on your educational background and approach. A continuous dialogue with facility managers and a network of multidisciplinary researchers will be supported through the Centre of Facilities Management.

The PhD project will qualify you to become a researcher while developing your understanding of the challenges of making buildings and use of buildings more sustainable. You will have the possibility to work with other key actors while expanding your personal network and contributing to the world knowledge base of SFM.

Required skills
Candidates should have a master’s degree in civil engineering or a similar MSc degree in environmental planning, social sciences or architecture.

We are looking for a colleague who possesses the following skills:

  • Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of sustainable buildings and facilities management
  • An interest in working scientifically with context dependent practices
  • Proficiency in oral and written English
  • Good grades
  • Knowledge of methods applied when making interviews

Conditions and terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the degree programmes of DTU.
