PhD Studentship in nanoTechnology, Physics, Chemistry & Biomedicine

Job Description : Magnetic Nanoparticles are of broad interest for applications ranging from high density data storage to heat transfer, sensors or drug delivery. Their synthesis and both the understanding and fine tuning of their properties are however prerequisites for broader applications. St Andrews University seeks to appoint a PhD student to work in an exciting, multidisciplinary and collaborative environment. The student will be working at the interface of Physics, Chemistry and biomedicine while some of the main challenges will involve:
– The design of colloidal syntheses,
– The characterisation and understanding of enhanced magnetic properties,
– The synthesis of hybrid nanomaterials,
– The exploration of their medical applications.

The PhD student will be supervised by Dr. P. André (St Andrews) while collaborations with the groups of Dr G. Florence (St Andrews) and Prof. A. Cuschieri (Dundee – IMSaT) will be actively pursued.
The studentship is at EPSRC rates (~£12900 pa & tax free) for a period of up to 3-3.5 years. The funding source does not allow overseas fee to be covered so that the successful student will preferably be from the UK or EU. If overseas candidates wish to apply then potential funding sources considered for overseas fee should be clearly commented in the cover letter.

For any application to be processed: Applicants for the position should have a strong background in one of the following field: physics, chemistry, material science, chemical engineering or pharmacy. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate a serious commitment to collaborative and interdisciplinary research. Information request as well as applications (including a cover letter, a CV and two recommendation letters) should be sent electronically to [email protected]. These emails will be filtered, so that the subject line should be “NanoMag09-SPCOM”, the attachments should be in a pdf format and named with the following name structure: “applicant_name-CV.pdf” and “applicant_name-COVER.pdf”. The cover letter should state the initial source of information and discuss the position in the context of both the applicant experience and the research completed in the group (see http://hybridnanocolloids.com). The CV should highlight the achievements and contributions while demonstrating the candidate perseverance, flexibility, originality and ability to communicate in a concise and structured manner.
Sending a copy of the transcripts and asking two recommendation letters to be sent would be appreciated even though not mandatory at the 1st stage of the selection process.

Closing Date: as soon as a successful candidate will be hired (Applications will be reviewed every 2 weeks)
