2014-2015 IMLI Scholarships for Masters in Maritime Law, Malta

Ministry for Foreign Affairs is offering Maritime Law scholarships for pursuing postgraduate programme leading to the Degree of Master of Laws (L.LM.) at the IMO International Maritime Law Institute. The course will be held from mid-September 2014 to May 2015. Scholarships are open for the Maltese citizens. Application should be submitted till 18th March 2014.

Eligibility: Must be Maltese citizens. The basic requirements are:
-a degree in law with a high standing from a recognised university; and
-proficiency in the English language: all students must be fully proficient in that language by the time they begin their studies. This means that they should be fully acquainted with the fundamentals of the English language; i.e. in reading, writing, listening, comprehension and speaking skills. Students who have not studied or made active use of the English language in recent years are strongly advised to refresh their English knowledge PRIOR to their arrival in Malta. They should bear in mind that the study of international maritime law in the English language demands a sophisticated knowledge of the Language. Production of evidence of English language proficiency is required.

Scholarship Open for International Students: Maltese citizens can apply for the Maritime Law scholarships.

Scholarship Description: Applications are invited from Maltese citizens for the 25th course at the IMO International Maritime Law Institute, Malta to be held from mid-September 2014 to May 2015. The course is at postgraduate level leading to a Master of Laws (L.LM.) and places particular emphasis on the international regulatory law relating to maritime safety and port protection of the marine environment. It also covers the commercial law aspects of shipping. A unique feature of the course is the provision of comprehensive training in the development and drafting of maritime legislation.

What does it cover? Each nominated student while in residence at IMLI shall receive a stipend of €315 per month or pro-rata. The stipend is intended to cover a student’s personal expenses including board and other day-to-day needs.

How to Apply: Application forms should be submitted to the Scholarships Section at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Valletta from 8.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m and 02.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. Alternatively applicants can also apply through the Ministry for Foreign Affairs Scholarship portal. Kindly note that this portal requires e-ID certification. E-ID registration details may be obtained from (www.mygov.mt). Those applying through this portal are to make sure that (c), (d) and (e) above have to be handed in as a hard copy at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Applications from Government and Parastatal employees and from the Private Sector will not be considered unless recommended by their Head of Department/Parastatal Organisation/employer respectively.
