Durham University invites applications for a PhD studentship in the Department of Archaeology. Applicants should have a good first degree in a relevant area, and hold, or be about to complete, a Masters degree. This studentship is available for a period of three years, subject to the student making satisfactory progress in their annual review.

Study Subject(s): Studentships are intended to support research on topics that are aligned with strategic objectives of Archaeology in Durham. Specific topics of interest are: Measuring, assessing and managing damage, preservation and care of archaeological monuments and sites in Syria, Settlement studies in the Middle East, in particular utilizing remote sensing techniques, Investigation of Graeco-Roman and Islamic burial practices in the Levant, Investigation of animal management strategies in Syria-Palestine from the Neolithic to the Iron Age, using isotopic analysis of faunal material.

Eligibility: The Maney Publishing Studentship will support an excellent candidate seeking to undertake doctoral studies, ideally in the archaeology of the Levant / eastern Mediterranean. Applicants should have a good first degree in a relevant area, and hold, or be about to complete, a Masters degree. Studentship is available for all Home, EU, Islands, Overseas students.

Scholarship Description: Through collaboration with Maney Publishing, an international publishing house that produces and distributes a wide range of academic publications and scholarly journals across Europe and the USA, we are delighted to offer our second Maney PhD Studentship. This comprises a PhD studentship consisting of full fees for three years (up to the value of Home/EU fee level) plus an annual stipend of £3000 per annum, again for three years, contingent on supporting impact-related activity in the Department of Archaeology. The Maney Publishing Studentship will support an excellent candidate seeking to undertake doctoral studies, ideally in the archaeology of the Levant/eastern Mediterranean. The studentship is supported by Maney Publishing and Durham University for a period of three years, subject to the student making satisfactory progress in their annual review. The successful applicant must be in a position to commence their studies on either 1st October 2015 or 1 January 2016. Applicants should have a good first degree in a relevant area, and hold, or be about to complete, a Masters degree.

Duration of award(s): The studentship is supported by Maney Publishing and Durham University for a period of three years, subject to the student making satisfactory progress in their annual review.

What does it cover? This PhD studentship consists full payment of tuition fees to a maximum of the given Home/EU rate (E.g. £3,996 in the AY14/15 increasing in subsequent years) for three years plus an annual stipend of £3000 per annum, again for three years, contingent on supporting impact-related activity in the Department of Archaeology. In the event tuition fees are higher than the standard Home/EU fee level (e.g. Overseas applicants) a student would be required to secure additional funding to cover any shortfall.

Selection Criteria: Applicants should demonstrate why their chosen topic is of interest to them, and how their current skills and contextual knowledge are relevant to the particular research area.

Notification: Short-listed candidates may be asked to attend for interview in mid-September. Applicants will notify of the outcome of their application on 1 October 2015.
