The Australian Government Department of Health is offering Pharmacy scholarships for Australian citizens or permanent residents of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descents. Up to 30 full time scholarships with a value of $10,000 per annum per student for rural students and 3 scholarships valued at $15,000 per annum to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Scholarships are available to study undergraduate or graduate degree for a period of four years at an Australian university. The application deadline is 30 January, 2015.

Eligibility:
-The Rural Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme (RPSS): In order to be eligible for the RPSS, applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents enrolled, or about to be enrolled, as a full-time student in a pharmacy undergraduate or graduate degree at an Australian university. Scholarships are available to students in any year of their undergraduate or graduate degree. The student must have lived in a defined rural area (PhARIA areas 2-6) for a minimum of five consecutive years, or eight cumulative years from the age of five. The student must also be a member of the student Rural Health Club or a member of their university’s affiliated Rural Health Club. Proof of membership is required prior to receiving scholarship payments.
-Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme: In order to be eligible for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme, applicants must be Australian citizens or permanent residents of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent enrolled, or about to be enrolled, as a full-time student in a pharmacy undergraduate or graduate degree at an Australian university. Scholarships are available to students in any year of their undergraduate or graduate degree. The student must also be a member of the student Rural Health Club or a member of their university’s affiliated Rural Health Club. Proof of membership is required prior to receiving scholarship payments. Although not a mandatory requirement, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students who currently live, or have lived, in a rural or remote community will be preferred for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme.

Scholarship Open for International Students: These Pharmacy scholarships are open Australian citizens or permanent residents of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descents (Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Scholarship).

Scholarship Description:Rural-Pharmacy_scholarship_Up to 30 full time scholarships for rural students and 3 scholarships to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are available to study pharmacy at university:
-The Rural Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme (RPSS) provides financial support to encourage and enable students from rural and remote communities to undertake undergraduate or graduate studies in pharmacy at university. Scholarship recipients are encouraged to seek employment in rural and remote areas following graduation. The RPSS is supplemented by the Rural Pharmacy Scholarship Mentor Scheme. It aims to reinforce the scholar’s ties to rural and regional Australia and provide support to scholars outside of the university and formal study environment. Rural Pharmacy mentor support involves at least quarterly contact, such as via email, telephone or face-to-face sessions as instigated by the scholar. Rural Pharmacy Mentors will be paid an honorarium of $375 (GST exclusive) each year for participating in the Scheme.
-Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme: In order for the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders communities to be adequately met by pharmacists, there is a need for more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pharmacists to work in the industry. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy Scholarship Scheme aims to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students to undertake undergraduate or graduate studies in pharmacy at university.

Number of award(s): Up to 30 full time scholarships for rural students and 3 scholarships to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students are available to study pharmacy at university.

Duration of award(s): Both scholarships are awarded for a period of four years. Funds are paid by the Guild in monthly instalments via direct Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT).

What does it cover?  There are at least 30 Rural Pharmacy scholarships offered annually, with a value of $10,000 per annum per student, meaning a student may be granted $40,000 over a four-year period. A total of 3 Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy scholarships valued at $15,000 per annum for a maximum of four years are offered annually. Study at honours level beyond the length of an undergraduate course is not covered by the scholarship.

Selection Criteria: In order to select Rural Pharmacy scholarship candidates, all eligible applicants will be ranked according to the following three criteria: rural experience; attendance at rural primary school and financial need. In order to select Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Pharmacy scholarship candidates, all eligible applicants will be ranked according to rural experience. Conditional Scholarships will be offered to the highest ranked applicants first.
