About

The DAAD promotes training specialists from developing and newly industrialized countries through its development-oriented postgraduate study programs. Well-trained local experts, who are networked with international partners, play an important part in the sustainable development of their countries. They are the best guarantee for a better future with less poverty, more education, and health.

The scholarships offer foreign graduates from developing and newly industrialized countries from all disciplines and with at least two years of professional experience the chance to take a postgraduate or Master’s degree at a state or state-recognized German university and, in exceptional cases, to take a doctoral degree, and to obtain a university qualification (Master’s/PhD) in Germany. This is an excellent opportunity for professionally experienced graduates from developing countries who want to take their graduate studies in Germany.

Eligibility

The Visiting Ph.D. Fellowship Programme allows registered doctoral students to utilize the resources and facilities at UNU-WIDER for their Ph.D. dissertation or thesis research on developing economies and to work with UNU-WIDER researchers in mutual interest.

Visiting Ph.D. fellows typically spend three consecutive months at UNU-WIDER before returning to their home institution. In 2022 the program aims to be in-person but might move online or hybrid depending on the situation with the COVID-19 pandemic. During the program, fellows prepare one or more research papers and present a seminar on their research findings. They may also have the opportunity to publish their research in the UNU-WIDER Working Paper Series.
