OeAD-GmbH on behalf of and financed by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Education, Science and Research is accepting applications for the Franz Werfel Grant from international students.

This program is open for persons who consumed at least 12 scholarship months can apply for the follow-up support programme. The study award is avaiable to international candidates to pursue a postdoctoral degree.

  • Linguistics and Literature offered at Austrian higher education institutions and universities can be applied for.
  • Eligibility Criteria: To be eligible, the applicants must meet all the following/given criteria:
  • The scholarship program is open to applicants from all over the world. The Werfel scholarship holders can work as guest researchers at institutes and carry out special studies in libraries, archives or at research institutions.

How to Apply

  • How to Apply: Admission applications must be made according to the application procedure of the respective Austrian institute or university. Scholarship applications must only be made via the online portal.
  • Supporting Documents: The students are required to present the following documents to the university:
  • Two letters of recommendation from university lecturers with a habilitation or equivalent recognition who have not agreed to academic supervision in Austria. The letters of recommendation can be freely formulated, must have a letterhead, date, signature of the recommender and stamp and must not be older than six months when the application is submitted.
  • Confirmation of supervision by a qualified member of the institute at the Austrian target institution (in justified cases, double supervision is also possible).
  • If applicable, a list of the titles of the courses taught
  • Scanned passport copy (page with name and photo)
  • Scanned copy of the university degree certificate for the completed diploma, master’s, PhD and/or doctoral studies
  • Upload complete list of publications (in the form: specify the five most important publications)
  • If applicable, proof of employment at a university
  • If applicable, proof of teaching activity

  • Admission Requirements: The applicants must meet the academic and entry requirements of the university or institute they wish to gain admission.
  • Language Requirement: The applicants must be a very good knowledge of English and/or German.

Benefits

The candidates will receive an educational fund during their studies for the academic session 2023/2024.

  • Monthly scholarship rate: up to EUR 1,250.00
  • Monthly mobility allowance: up to EUR 600 (for stays of 3 months or more)
  • Support in arranging accommodation and insurance:
  • On request, the OeAD student housing will endeavor to arrange accommodation (dormitory or apartment) for scholarship holders. Monthly costs: EUR 220 to EUR 600 (depending on the comfort level of the scholarship holders). A monthly fee of EUR 21.00 is payable to OeAD student housing as an administrative fee for placement.
  • Health insurance valid in Austria and recognized by the Austrian authorities is required for the duration of the stay. OeAD-GmbH can help you take out adequate insurance. Monthly costs: As a rule, currently around EUR 55 to EUR 200 (guideline value; depends on age, scholarship category and state of health).
  • The costs for accommodation and insurance must be paid from the scholarship.
  • The costs for medical care during stays abroad within the EU are charged by the respective national insurance providers. When doing a scholarship in EU countries, you should take your European health insurance card with you.
  • Scholarship holders from non-European developing countries will also receive a travel allowance of up to EUR 1,000 upon presentation of original receipts.
  • Persons who are not citizens of an EU/EEA state and are planning a stay of more than 6 months: If your accommodation costs in Austria exceed EUR 300 per month, you must also provide the residence authorities with proof of your own funds in order to obtain the residence permit. This amount can vary depending on the individual costs for your health insurance in Austria and any other financial obligations.
