French Embassy Scholarship Programmes for South African and Lesotho Students, 2019

French university is offering the French Embassy Scholarships for South African and Lesotho students to undertake a master’s degree for the academic year 2019-20.

The SAFe Think scholarship program was launched by the Embassy of France in South Africa in 2010 with the aim of funding exceptional students wishing to undertake a master’s degree at a French university, in all fields of human and social sciences.

The quality of French higher education is widely recognized throughout the world. French institutions figure prominently in the Shanghai Classification of Universities, in the rankings of the Financial Times and Times Higher, and in the European Report on Science and Technologies published by the European Commission.

No knowledge of the French language required, depending on the availability of English programs in the student’s field and the study program applied for.

  • Course Level: Scholarships are available to undertake a master’s degree program at a French university.
  • Study Subject: Scholarships are awarded in all fields of humanities and social sciences and all other fields of study (engineering, management, economy/ finance, IT, architecture/design, sports, biology, etc.).
  • Scholarship Award: Full scholarship includes:
  •  annual tuition fees (under 5 000 euros)
  • round-trip airfare
  • health insurance
  • a monthly stipend (700 euros/month)
  • Schengen visa fees
  • Scholarship can be taken in France

Eligibility:

Applicants can apply for this scholarship if they meet the given criteria below:

  • Citizenship of South Africa or Lesotho only (temporary or permanent residency excluded).
  • Bachelor’s or Honour’s degree (depending on academic year the student is enrolling for), completed or to be completed by the time the student would depart for France. (Minimum requirement is at least a B-degree, i.e. B.Tech, B.A, B.Com, BSc, etc.)
  • At least three selected French institutions of the candidate’s choice. Students should apply for admission to these universities concurrently to the bursary application (if applicants have not been accepted at an institution yet). They may contact Campus France to assist them with this process, but it remains the student’s responsibility to contact and apply on time to universities.
  • Applications from all academic disciplines will be considered. However, different application requirements and procedures may apply for the following fields. It is advisable that they contact the relevant person before submitting their application: French Language Practice (i.e. translation, interpreting or French language teaching): Mr. Damien Guyard, Attaché for French Language Cooperation and Social and Political Sciences (i.e. Political Science, International Relations, Sociology, Public Administration, Governance, Peace and Security, Conflict Resolution, etc.): Ms Johanna Stilo, Programme Officer for SAFe Think programme.
  • No knowledge of the French language required, depending on the availability of English programs in the student’s field and the study program applied for.

Nationality: Scholarships are open for students from South Africa and Lesotho.

How to Apply

  • Applications are to be submitted via e-mail only. Please submit the following documents in 6 separate PDF attachments, clearly marked:
  • Fully completed and signed the application form (please print out the pdf form, fill in neatly by hand, sign, and scan).
  • Motivation letter (1-2 pages)
  • CV (1-2 pages)
  • Copy of applicants South African and Lesotho passport or ID
  • Copy of all degree certificates and academic transcripts, chronological according to date of completion (in one pdf file)
  • Acceptance letter from a university in France, or written proof that they applied to at least 2 universities.
  • Entrance Requirement: Applicants must have a bachelor’s or honour’s degree (depending on academic year the student is enrolling for), completed or to be completed by the time the student would depart for France. (Minimum requirement is at least a B-degree, i.e. B.Tech, B.A, B.Com, BSc, etc.).
  • English Language Requirement: No knowledge of French language required, depending on the availability of English programs in the student’s field and the study program applied for.
