Government of Australia Fully Funded MSc Fellowships at World Maritime University, 2018

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority is announcing applications for 10 new fellowships for qualified applicants from the South Pacific to join WMU’s 14-month MSc in Maritime Affairs programme.

A limited number of fellowships to provide financial support to students are given each year by a range of international donors. All WMU programmes of study are designed to respond to the current needs of the maritime industry through a balance of academic study and practical experience.

The World Maritime University (WMU) in Malmö, Sweden is a postgraduate maritime university founded in 1983 by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a specialized agency of the United Nations. The aim of WMU is to further enhance the objectives and goals of IMO and IMO member States around the world through education, research, and capacity building to ensure safe, secure, and efficient shipping on clean oceans. WMU is truly an organization by and for the international maritime community.

Scholarship Description: 

  • Applications Deadline: Applications can be submitted at any time; there are no cut-off dates.
  • Course Level: Fellowships are available to pursue MSc programme.
  • Study Subject: Fellowships are awarded to learn 14-month MSc in Maritime Affairs programme.

WMU offers a postgraduate programme in Maritime Affairs, leading to a Master of Science or a Postgraduate Diploma, in the following specializations:

  3. Maritime Law & Policy
  4. Maritime Safety & Environmental Administration
  5. Ocean Sustainability, Governance & Management
  6. Port Management
  7. Shipping Management & Logistics

MSc students benefit from a unique programme of global field studies at host organizations such as shipping companies, ports authorities, maritime administrations, and other governmental and non-governmental           organizations, throughout the world. The cooperation of an enormous range of global institutions offers a unique opportunity to experience the application of the latest theories and technologies in real-life maritime situations, and to forge bonds with a global network of maritime professionals.

The programme varies each year and by specialization. Examples of previous destinations are listed below.

  • Scholarship Award: Paying the full fellowship fee of $57,700 includes accommodation provided by WMU, a monthly living allowance, and an airline ticket home at the end of the programme.
  • Nationality: The Australian Fellowships are open to maritime professionals employed by the Governments of Papua New Guinea, Fiji, Solomon Islands, Cook Islands, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga and Samoa.
  • Number of Scholarships: Up to 10 fellowships are available. Five fellowships are available to candidates joining the Class of 2019 in September 2018, and a further five for candidates joining the Class of 2020 in September 2019.

Eligibility for the Scholarship: 

Eligible Countries: These fellowships are open for applicants from South Pacific Regions:

Cook Islands Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:

WMU admits students who are already established in careers in the maritime field. The Admissions Board will consider only those applicants who meet the following general entrance requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent university qualification

or

  • The highest grade certificate of competency for unrestricted service as master mariner or chief engineer, or equivalent maritime qualifications

and

  • Substantial, directly relevant professional experience
  • Competence in English language, demonstrated by an internationally recognized standard test (See the full English language requirements on the next page)
  • Computer competence (at least the ability to use Microsoft Office)

Solid computer skills are essential since students are required to use computers from the beginning of the first semester to write their examination answers, complete assignments, and carry out research and other projects. Applicants who lack computer and keyboard skills cannot be accepted. From the group of applicants who meet these general entrance requirements, the Admissions Board will select only the best-qualified candidates, taking into account all their qualifications and achievements.

Additional Entrance Requirements: Accelerated Programme

In addition to meeting the requirements outlined above, applicants for advanced standing must demonstrate they have already covered the content of the first semester of the standard programme. The additional qualifications required are:

  • A postgraduate qualification in an area directly relevant to the specialization the student intends to follow
  • Senior level, directly relevant professional experience
  • Proficiency in English without attending the English and Study Skills Programme, and with an appropriate score in the writing skills section of the test. The tests and marks required are specified under “English language requirements”
  • Excellent IT skills

Applicants to the accelerated programme must supply detailed transcripts from their undergraduate and postgraduate study. In lieu of transcripts detailed syllabi, the marks gained, and a full academic reference must be supplied.

Special Information for South African Applicants

Applicants from South Africa can seek funding for their studies from TETA, the Transport Education and Training Authority.

English Language Requirements: The English and Study Skills Programme (ESSP) is for anyone who needs to communicate more effectively in English in the maritime field. ESSP students are typically:

  • WMU students enrolled in the ESSP as a condition of entry into the MSc programme
  • WMU students who elect to take the ESSP in preparation for the MSc programme
  • Non-WMU students who wish to upgrade their professional and academic English communication skills in the maritime context.

Test Requirements: All applicants to the University must submit an internationally recognized English language proficiency test. Acceptable tests include IELTS, TOEFL, Cambridge examinations, and GCE O-levels in English language. Other tests are accepted by the Admissions Board only under exceptional circumstances; applicants should check with the Registry in such cases.
